Old tyres and new caravans
This is a warning to anyone buying a new caravan. Check the age of the tyres before you accept delivery as tyres have an expected life span.
I purchased a new coachman pastiche in 2014.This March i took it for its 2nd service and to my suprise was told that the tyres were 2011 tyres. I informed the dealer where i purchached the caravan and asked what they were prepared to do about it. They
contacted Coachman who told them that were not prepared to do anything.
I then contacted trading standards and told them all about it, they said that my complaint was with the dealer and not coachman. Trading standards asked if i was told that the tyres on the new caravan were 3 years old and i said no. They then said if i was
not told that then caravan had been miss sold as being a new van it should have new equipment.
I then contacted marquis preston from where i purchased the van and after telling them this they then agreed to renew the tyres as a goodwill gesture. Would they have had this goodwill if i had not contacted trading standards

dt, you know as well as I that would not have done a thing. However it's good that they did.
BTW How can you tell the age of a tyre? I appreciate that I should know but......

Cheers, just what I wanted. Will check mine tomorrow, as I guess life time of a tyre is 8yrs max.

Will definitely have to look at mine then as the van is 5 yrs old now. Wonder if the ATS guy was trying it on a bit, for a sale?

As a general rule (and following guidance issued by the tyre makers? trade body, the British Tyre Manufacturers? Association, it is advised that caravan tyres should ideally be replaced when 5 years old, and should never be used when more than 7 years old.

Perhaps a fine point but is it 5/7 years from manufacture or 5/7 of use? If it was the latter the age from manufacture would be less important. It is the type of use that caravan tyres get that influences the need to change them when they are only part worn.
When I caravanned I tended to change them at around the 4/5 year of use.David

In many cases, like for instance when there has been a change of ownership of the caravan, the years of use may be unknown so it can only be based on the year of manufacture.
In Germany, where there is a legal limit of 6 years if one wishes to tow at 100km/h (among other criteria), the equivalent of the MOT will also go by the date of manufacture.
