New to Caravaning after a 20 year absence.  I am about to change my two steel Calor 7kg Bottles for two Calor 6kg Light Bottles.  What is the availabilty of the Light Refills on sites around the UK, easy or not?  I dont want to run out of gas anywhere and
find only steel available.  I am also planning on spending November to February in France and Spain.  Any member(s) have insight on this please.

Beau,I have no problems here in the south east to exchange calor light cylinders, but they are like for like, but this has been issues for some on this forum.Where you might have problems is exchanging 7kg steel for the 6kg lites. If you are successful it
may be worth letting people know on this forum.

Might consider changing if it turns out that you can swap one for t'other!

Out of interest, do they use the same connectors?

...The standard six steel and light use same connectors but the seven butane is a clip on

We changed ours a couple of years ago at Hunters Moon CC site. We exchanged the blue Butane for the Calor Lite Propane, at only the cost bottles full,we already had a Propane regulator ready to use. Don't know if this still applies.

the main issue here is how much gas are you likely to use (in the four coldest months of the year)......, as you cannot swap overseas nor refill the Calors...

if you are on ehu most/all of the time, then i expect you will make use of it and your gas usage might not be too high.

however, if you think that there is a chance of running out, (do you heat or cook with gas...)  post back and we can highlight the options that might help....Happy

Write your comments here...Hi, I don't know if it is still the case, but I exchanged 3 very old steel butane bottles that I had bought for £10 empty for 3 full Calor Lights plus £18 each at GO without a problem. Worth a phone call to find out. One and a half  used so far in over 2 years.

OK ,if I stayed on a site say in November and did not plug in to the EHU ,so used gas for heating and cooking and fridge how long would a 6kg cylinder last , I know it can only be a ball park figure....but would it ( 6kg ) last the week?.?.?

someone who keeps more accurate records that me might be able to answer....might be some figures in Merves thread....I have larger capacity supply and refil when convenient, not really noting usage.....

however....finger in the air..6kg is about right for a week, though depending on how long (and how high) the heating is used....

    can you carry two bottles....?

We have one lite and one steel. Changed a steel for lite several years ago at Sandringham for the price of the refill. However, when I have asked since about changing the other bottle, the answer is always the same NO. At least not unless I buy the new lite
plus the cost of the gas.

Husky, I don't think a 6kg would last 7 days if you were using it for everything, I think its more like 5 days, in really cold weather with the heating on all the time probaby 3-4 days. Pretty sure a while ago those that rally posted the figures I have quoted.
We don't rally and use sites even when abroad we were away for 24-25 weeks last year and still have around a third of a 6kg bottle left.

HD, as you are starting from scratch with your MH, wouldn't you be better off going with refillables? If I didn't already have a couple of Calorlites and a Gas Light I would.

Don't forget BP Gaslight bottles are the same weight saving as Calorlite, you have a supplier near you called 'Novagas' TN6 2PJ. Of course you have to pay the initial bottle hire, I run one 10kg bottle (10kg of gas in a 6kg bottle), they also do a smaller 5kg.

Am I correct in thinking that a 6 Kg light refill is more expensive than a 6 Kg steel refill?

I have just paid £18.22 for the 6 Kg steel refill at Go Outdoors with a discount card.

Yes, that is indeed the case; certainly from Flogas.

Absolutely no excuse for it!  ... they simply know that people will pay up regardless because they want a full 'light' bottle.

Is that the same principle as a quart in a pint pot?

someone who keeps more accurate records that me might be able to answer..

We have just returned yesterday from 5 nights away on a 'no facilities' site (field) and I have calculated gas usage from accurate before/after weighings: 7.5kg (1.5kg/day).

    Parameters:

Small caravan (Elddis Avante 362).  2 people.

Heating; Fridge; cooking all meals; hot water inc. 4 showers.

Weather: sunny but cold; below freezing on 2 nights.  Heating at 20C for about 10hrs/day.  We DO NOT have any heating on at night (2.5C inside the van on Tuesday morning!).

I have no doubt that you could easily get through double that amount if you keep heating on at night and/or have a bigger 'van.

Laughing I noticed that after I was timed out CY, 16kg total weight including 10kg of gas, empty bottle weighs 6kg. Smile

My local 'everything hire' type of place will exchange a BP Gaslight 10kg for £23.88.

weight in the van, weight to physically swap in the locker...

BB, that was an answer to M's post

the M/H is set up for propane ,and i only have a 4.5kg butane, so seeing as we plan to use more gas and i have to buy a bottle i thought i would go for "lite"

FYI Calor say that there is a nationwide scarcity of Calorlite bottles;I have just spent the last three days helping a warden mate of mine get his site ready for the season. When the Calor lorry came he was only allowed two 6kg  Calorlite bottles(pre BH remember)
but the rest of his order was all steel bottles despite ordering a dozen of the lite version. The driver cited national scarcity as the reason for the short order. He was not impressed!
