we purchased a new persuit 530/4 in march 2015 and went to the dealers to part ex it for the new Persuit with bunks, we were amazed to find that the value had dropped by a wopping five thousand pounds in ten months. the dealer told us that the price offered
was the bailey price guide. Dont think we will be dealing with bailey again.

I''m not sure it would make much difference what make it was. As soon as you take it from the main dealer it has lost a significant amount of it's new value. Although it probably does not help, if you keep this new one 5 years, it is unlikely loose a lot
    more.

Agree with Steve's post above, all makes of caravan bought new will immediately decrease in value the minute you leave the dealer.

We actually kept our last van 9 years and didn't lose much more than you when we traded it in, we didn't buy a new one though, not sure if  that  made any difference.

    vat @ 20% on a new £20k van is £4k.....theres your answer.

changing after 10 mths will hurt the wallet, though how much £4k hurts depends on the deal on offer and how much you want to change....and why.

we bought a 2 month old Bolero 6 years ago at a huge discount.....previous owner one trip to continent, 1.5k miles, said van not big enough.....he took a massive hit in buying a bigger van.....dealer (and us) did well on the change of mind.....

Our current van was sold to someone who found it to small and sold it in a month, so we bought it at a substanshal price reduction on a new van  of £3500,

The price you were quoted is not what Bailey say its what is in the "Parkers Guide" the same as cars as the moment it leaves the forecourt the VAT is paid

I am not sure what else would be expected in the circumstances. The dealer has to sell it as a second hand caravan at less than the new price and service it, pay the salesman commission on the sale and make a profit to stay in business.  The make of the
caravan is irrelevant. Selling so soon after buying is always going to result in a substantial loss although hard bargaining might get the loss down a bit.

Exactly the same would have happened with a car.

I am surprised that you are surprised.  Caravans are no different to cars. Once you take it off the forecourt you have lost a large amount of money hence why many people never but new buto purchase demonstrators that are a few months old.

When we change our caravan we always factor in what we saved per year on hire or rent of the same thing for the amount of holidays that we have. Over the years that is a lot of money and you still have something to sell. Not saying that Caravans or Motorhome
holidays are cheap today, the beauty as we all know is the freedom.    Happy

I took a big hit on trade-in on my two berth Avondale when we traded to a fixed bed van after ten months and that was bought second-hand. I wasn't an entirely happy bunny but I will probably keep this one until it or I drop.

I too am surprised the OP is surprised, if you are unhappy with the trade in offered then try selling it privately or shop around other dealers.

As stated before 20% vat on a 15000 van is 3000 so the van only lost 2000 not that bad really.

weve just bought a pursuit 2014 550-4 with sunroof extra pack alko lock  ATC  extra lights bar b que point and auto engage mover for 11995 from a dealer  hardly used and mint condition cost new 18000 can't be bad.

As above, not sure why the OP is amazed, fundamental economics. Dealer should have been honest and explained the reality, instead of suggesting it was somehow the manufacturers fault.

Vince, glad you got a good deal on a mint 550/4

I just took delivery of a new 2016, fully spammed up 550/4 myself. Upgraded upholstery, ATC, sunroof, option packs, external points, shocks, mover swap, and servicing. Very very pleased.

Not fair to say how little I paid, but it was nowhere near £18k, not even remotely close, dealer was quite happy to make the sale.
