In all the years I had a Caravanstore attached to the side of my caravan that banging only happened once at Old Hartley. We had some unused foam dishclothes in the van which I cut in half and rolled up and put under the Caravanstore which seemed to stop
    it banging.

.....interesting thought, thank you. Would need to 'glue' the foam to the underside of the awning cassette as the wind during January has been so violent that it has been lifting six to eight inches before falling back so anything under there not secured
    would fall out.

I suggest if the forecast is for winds that cause that sort of problem then it might be prudent to remove the caravanstore,as the stress on the van could cause water ingress problems

Would it be possible to turn the van around so its got its back to the prevailing wind?

We had one for 8 years on our Abbey, rolled up it survived several 60 / 70mph gales and 1000's of miles towing at 60 mph. Never any water ingress problems. In it's rolled condition I would not think the stresses any more than a conventional awning, moving
about in a high wind, would exert. Our experience was similar to David, with it only banging about rarely. It seemed to occur when the strong wind was near end on to the van.

Never experienced this as yet with my Fiamma, have travelled a few thousand miles with it attached and not happened when static,  but there's always a first time although mine is a 3.6 metre and weighing in at 12.5 kg. Anyway mine has gel pads affixed at the ends and centre of the zip bag so a soft landing is to be assumed, these were attached when purchased but do come as an accessory.

During winter months in storage its removed and strung up in the garage to the rafters.

What I did was to lift the Caravanstore away from the side of the van and place the rolled up foam as high up as possible where the return of the circular casette turns in and you might find that most. if not all stay in place. I have not tried this but
some pipe insulation foam might serve the same purpose?

    Paul and Kate

Here is John Rose in action when he fitted ours.

    good pics, David....

a couple of things thatbturn an ordinary Thule wind out canopy into somthing much stronger seems to be the two back uprights and the horizontal pieces that attach to the edges pf the canopy....

the edge pieces would be extremely useful as they add strength and give a fixing channel for any side pieces that might be aded.

i had a look on the Omnistore site but couldnt see them sold separately.....did they come with your kit?

Unfortunately this isn't possible as the heads on the lock nuts that secure the cassette in place have been damaged so if I take if off the van I will have to obtain replacements. Equally it was a nightmare getting the awning on in the first place so I really
wouldn't want to try this on a regular basis.

Thanks for replying any way. Tony

The plugs that hold the awning in place in the rail are fairly easy to obtain, if ridiculously expensive. The postage being more than the item cost. If I remember correctly about £11 total. Once you have the old ones out however, you can try and find some
new compatible threaded bolts. Or if the thread is damaged cut a new one for an appropriate bolt. We also have a Cadiz and did not find it that difficult to insert into the rail, once I had applied some silicon lubricant. I think it is likely to last a lot
longer if you can remove it for the winter months. We normally take ours off in November and put it back on in April.

I do like the idea of the Thule - especially now our van is no longer in warranty.  The main problem, of course is the cost - about £800 for the canopy (4.5m) and about twice as much for the extra 'Panoramic' safari room.  I'll just dream about it for the
    moment! Laughing
