Selling caravan
Last week we placed an order for a new caravan. Our helpful dealer advised us to sell privately. I am wondering what other people's experience is of the best sites for advertising....? The one we are selling is an Eldiss Xplore 402 2 berth.

Haven't sold a caravan privately, but have sold 2 cars on Gumtree. It's free to advertise, you can add photos, and sold both cars-one 2 days after ad went live, the other within 24 hours!! Can't fault it.

Because of the potential of the con merchants I sold our caravan through a local dealer. (The part exchange offered was hopeless). I paid a fixed price to the dealer (£500) and agree a minimum price I was prepared to accept. The dealer then prepared, marketed
and displayed the van. It sold in a month and after paying the dealer I made £1500 pounds more than the part exchange deal.0 -
If hou sell it yourself just be careful as there are more sharks out there than you would believe. Get all your paperwork ready though and have the chassis number there as they may want to do an HPI check.
Beware of any body not paying cash and do not let the caravan out of your sight until you are paid.

When I bought my current van I asked the dealer how much the old one was "in the book" - then I added £500 (for possible bargaining) and put it on gumtree. Sold it very quickly for full asking price - I was well pleased - but also used a lot of care.

I sold a caravan on Autotrader; they have a dedicated caravan section. Recently I had no luck and traded in the van. I got one text to my mobile offering to buy it; obviously a scam.

Both of ours were sold 'outside the house' with a self-made poster in the window just stating 'For Sale' and a price. We sold both of them within days! The second was sold during the fuel strike in September 2000. We'd seen a caravan we wanted to buy
but the dealer offered us a derisory amount is part exchange. We put it up for sale for £1500 more than we were offered, and it was bought at that price because the buyer had seem exactly the same caravan at £1000 more than we were asking in a local dealer.

The caravan we wanted to buy went down in price by £2100 in the 'end of season sale' and we ended up £3600 better off on the deal and they threw in an awning and all sorts of out of season offers.I know these days it wouldn't be done in case you invite in undesirables but it worked for us. If you store locally stick a sign in the window as well as advertising it elsewhere.
There are so many free sites to advertise on - here on the Caravan Club, for instance, UKCS and other Caravanning forums, and all the ones mentioned above.
We still have the caravan we bought in 2000 - and still love it!

I would repeat what Crusader has said above. We advertised our van and awning for sale separately on the Club site which is managed by www.caravansforsale.co.uk. We had several scam emails from people saying they wanted the items and were prepared to pay by Paypal for various reasons (working away, etc.etc). Don't be taken in. These people are scammers pure and simple. They will send someone to collect your item and then claim the money back from Paypal. Paypal rules say any item sold with Paypal must be sent by courier or post with an attendant receipt. These people know that and try to get your goods and their money back.
We were warned so not caught out but unless you know about it, they can seem very plausible.
We traded ours in as it happened, just for the sheer convenience of not having to sell privately.0 -
I advertised ours on the club site and had several scam replies and eventually sold it on Findmycaravan within a week of advertising it on there. It did cost £26 but that would have covered me advertising it for a year if necessary.
