I think if you are a Motorhomer, Europe is the only place to go, particulary France and Germany.
Most attractions allow motorhomes to stay a few nights, lots of aire de services where you pay very little or nothing at all.
In the UK, you can't even dump your waste without having to book in to a campsite, no such problems in Europe,
I thought that was what lay-bys were for!!

Thank you for that tip Molly. I will let my OH know that we need to sell our MH as we are limited to touring in UK at moment.
Hang on though. We seem to be having a fantastic time just in the UK, I think we might keep it after all!

That's a very narrow view, Molly. Open your mind and look around you. There are wonderful places to go in UK. Of course Europe has a part to play in many people's holidays but it's not the 'only' place to go by any means.

.....I think molly missed the word 'responsibly'....
its a bit like 'dog poo' discussions, in that the few bad apples give the responsible many a bad name.
as we are in the 'right' section, ill add that one of the really good ideas in France is that they often have an 'aire' attached to a campsite, where those are passing through can fill/empty water for a nominal charge or even stay on the aire (again cheaply)
yet use the site facs.....
the difference in fees reflecting the 'basic nature' of the aire in lieu of a lovely green pitch....
dont see that catching on here, though....

While you are talking about aires BB can I ask a question. Do you stay on them and go out and about for say the afternoon, do you feel its safe to do so. as you know we have not yet tried them, nothing against them for overnighting but staying on them and
leaving the van to go for a walk or bike ride I'm not so sure.0 -
I still think if you put your mind to it and do some leg work ,you can still do a tour of the UK without booking any sites , you might have to open minded as to where you stay ,but I'm sure you will find somewhere to bed down for the night ?,

Of course you can Husky, don't let them blind you into thinking it has to always be booked. Main season will of course be the biggest problem but it is doable, we do it off season in the UK (about the only time we tour UK) Between both clubs CL's CS's and
all the private and commercial sites, plus motorhome night stops.0 -

Write your comments here...Husky, we never book sites more than a couple of days before we set off, of any kind! There are just so many, of all different sorts, ranging from pub stops, MH overnight stops, CLs, CS's, club based sites, small private sites,
big private sites, farm stops, etc..... They key is flexibility, not to limit your options so that they are too narrow. Might not be for everyone, some will need showers and things like HS and EHU. But we know it can be done very easily, because that is how
we tour. Rough idea of where you want to go, what you want to see, them just pick a few options and link them to make most of your stay. It we are on a tour, rather than having a more relaxed break, then we seldom have more than one night in the same place.
Travel light in this instance, just what you need to be comfortable, might include bikes, might not, might take extra chairs and table, might not. It really is that simple! Packing up a small MH not cluttered with lots of extras takes 10 minutes. As does setting

yes, of course i realised.....and i wasnt points scoring, just showing how easy it can be for any/either group to pick up a bad reputation....
the thing is, we 'joke' about and we all know how to be responsible, but there may be those who dont 'see' the joke and .......well, you know.......result, not good.

as you know, aires are all over France and can be anywhere from right in the middle of a large city, or a town......or even somewhere in a tiny village.......or even virtually in the middle of nowhere....
i cant say that we've ever felt that way after parking up, but we have, once or twice, moved on from an aire after thinking that we could 'do better'....
weve strolled or biked from pretty well all of our stops, but as always, if you dont feel right, move on.....theres a load to choose from....enjoy the freedom...

TDA, that's what we plan to do ,is to travel light and have the M/H ready so that at a moments notice we can just take off for a few days ,well that's the plan !!
It will be a reality HD, so easy. Little tour we did last year, Yorkshire to Worcester, stop at Bromyard Downs Club Site. On to Ludlow, taking in two castles and Ludlow town, staying just outside, a very nice CL. Day spent on Long Mynd , walking and bird watching, down off moors, into Church Stretton, along to Much Wenlock Club Site. Up next day, visit Wroxeter Roman Town and then onto Shrewsbury area, Attingham House Gardens. Meander home via Peak District. Site costs averaged about £13 per night, marvellous doing all meals in MH, we love cooking in it, saves a lot and we eat comfortably! Brilliant walks for dogs as well. It is just so easy!
Sites only booked a few days in advance, we needn't have booked Club Sites to be honest. We were out doing what we wanted from early morning to sun set, never retracing our steps at any point!

I have posted an edit AD as you will see. We could have phoned on the day while out to all the sites, and we knew of back up CLs had we needed them. But we knew those two lovely Club Sites would be fine. Will have to rethink after end of this year though

..Off peak in the UK is not a problem,but like anywhere at peak times with a time scale its better to know than chance it

Bladon Chains was full when we stopped there on Tuesday the 30th of June last year and that does not count either as high season or a "honey pot"
Possibly because that was the date of the Blenheim Food Festival?

I'd always check B Palace first due to so many events being held there...Elton John in June for starters.
Surely the difference between here and there is looking a bit biased towards retired and touring? What about families who need to book, who stay put for their two or three week breaks? Should they book ahead?

...Bladen chains it always busy but normally has midweek pitches unless something on at the Palace (often)as its in a honey pot area
