Amending caravan insurance mid-term
In a few days time I will be changing my caravan. My caravan insurance is 10 months old. Will I have to cancel the current policy and therefore loose the year's no claim discount on a new policy or do insurance companies allow you to amend the existing
policy?

I thought it would be better if I advised Caravan Guard that I would be storing my caravan two doors away for a period of 4 to 5 days whilst we had our drive re-done. I was surprised that they needed to make an amendment to the policy rather than just making
a note of the very temporary move and this would incur a charge which I think was £15.00. However, what they suggested was that I make the neighbour's drive an alternative/ additional storage address on the policy which meant, if ever I needed to, I could
store the caravan on his drive without any further notification to Caravan Guard. This was then included in the £15.00 policy amendment fee. This arrangement may be of help to people like TrackerEKS who would appear to have more than one storage address during
the year. What it suggests to me is that anyone could give two storage addresses when taking out a policy and be covered by the insurance providing similar security arrangements were in place at both addresses.0 -

You should be able to register both your home address and the address of the storage site on the insurance so you don't need to amend that when it goes in storage (I have that on my C&CC policy at least).
To the OP's question, as others have said, it'll be a £20 or so fee. If you cancel, you'd get a minimal refund after 10 months (minus a £20 fee), so it's a question of weighing up the option of new policy or amendment to existing.

amending current policy for 6 weeks will cost me £38. New policy with existing company at the end of term is £350. Alternative new policy prices range from £350 to £385. My conclusion is that if you are close to the end of your caravan insurance it is unlikely
to be of benefit to amend your current policy, best to allow it to run down and start afresh. Obviously it may make sense the longer it is before renewal is due.0 -
The club have not charged us for policy amendments when we changed the caravan and storage. I doubt we would stay with anyone who did charge.
The car is on an internet policy. I can do most amendmentd by e mail for nothing but If I do ring there is acharge.
If you are changing the caravan I think you will be stuck with what they charge as there will almost certainly be a charge to cancel which would wipe out all or most of any saving from changing insurer.

Our renewal with CC is in late July. Last time we changed our van we sold one van in mid January and did not get the new one till late March.
OH rang CC and discussed this, they suspended the policy in January while we had no van, then re-instated it in late March. We still renew in late July.
No loss of any NCD, and I cannot remember there being any admin fee, but it was in 2008.

Maybe the issues is with motorcaravan insurance, as this albeit with the Club is not directly with the Club???

I am with the caravan club....I. noticed on my insurance in the small print as I declared my van is kept in storage that I was also covered for short periods at my home address for loading and unloading and etc etc Inc overnight time..so I don't know if
this helps anyone0 -
Cost me £20 to make an amendment to my policy yesterday with Shield Total Insurance. There was no increase in premium, just the admin charge.
I did see earlier in a magazine flyer that the Caravan Club promote that they do not charge for policy amendments, good on them.

I ran into an interesting question when I sold my M/H in 2011. The admin/cancellation fee was more than the return premium or to put it another way i was being asked to pay for the priviledge of not being insured. I simply refused to cancel the cover but
under explanation that there could be no cover because I had no insurable interest in the vehicle so nothing to cover. The insurers protested that there would be all sorts of problems with the MID etc but I stood my ground and as far as I know the new owner
had no problems.0 -

this helps anyoneThe policy gives you this cover mainly to allow maintenance but it can be for overnight outside your home at the start or end of a trip away. If you are insured elsewhere you may not have this coverso check the policy before doing it.
