Our caravan is in a field near the house. Water etc drained down, but that's all. Not plugged in. So no heating on ever. The battery may or may not be still in it when we next get away (it depends if "someone" has "borrowed" it for a farm job).

No never, but we can't get away until May (faming takes precedence), and a bit of sun throughthe windows warms it up.

Never thought about leaving the heating on in the caravan , it has now been stored at home for several months , personal choice , I would not leave the heating on , my caravan is covered and I go into it leaving the door open 2 to 3 times a week .

Mine is permanently plugged in, mainly to keep the battery charged up but also with the heating system "alive" but turned right down so as to only come on if the internal temperature drops below 8 degrees. In practise I have found that that prevents what
I call "cold soak" that horrible feeling of a dead caravan when you first open it up in the spring. But the low setting prevents high bills when the time comes to pay!TF

Whether I leave heating on or not varies. Most of our tours are between start of April and end of September. The heating is not left on between tours. After the September tour I do not undertake a thorough drain down and may well leave heating on 5 degrees.
Of course it often is not doing anything but is a simple precaution in the event of a hard frost. If the weather turns severe then I do a thorough drain down and then do not bother with heating. Our next trip away is around 10 weeks later in December when
we are away for a couple of weeks. If the weather is very cold I drain down thoroughly on return. When it is mild I leave the heating on and don't bother to drain down until tha van goes in for its service in March..0 -
DD, - No, Not really. Just wanted to ensure that the van never froze up in the cold weather, even though I do drain down thoroughly, not forgetting the toilet flush tank, as I did once to my cost! 8 degrees seemed to give a reasonable comfort zone but
was low enough not to trigger the heating system unnecessarily.TF

We have a cl and our caravan is barn stored. It is constantly mains connected with a small fan heater just above frost stat to keep it aired and battery in good condition. I have noticed some caravans if not aired have a certain aroma to them.

Our caravan is in storage when not in use but whenever I get it out for a trip a few days before departing I always connect it to electricity supply, obviously to top up the battery (the solar panel works well when in storage) but also as an anti-theft device
(along with all the usuals). My theory being that a thief would rather steal a caravan not connected rather than cut the cable (?) or risk disturbing anybody living in the 'van. Having had a caravan stolen a couple of years ago (with all security devises attached
but not with cable plugged in) I am cautious of leaving it 'unplugged'. Although plugged in the electricity doesn't have to be on to act as an extra anti-theft deterrent.0 -
As we spend all the year round in the caravan, we keep it heated in the winter in the same way as you would if you were living in a house.

Although we are not away in the van quite as much as MM, we don't bother putting any heating on when we're at home as we know we will be away again in 2 or 3 weeks time.

I have noticed that a rather nice new caravan I walk the dogs past most days always seems to have its electric plugged into the house . I assume it's for heating ? I thought at first it was getting the fridge ready for the next trip or something but it is
plugged in every single time . I just air mine occasionally when not being used and perhaps put on the fan heater occasionally. Does anyone else leave their heating on ?Just wondering it it's mine lol. Our new Pursuit is always plugged in. We keep two small oil filled electric radiators on out there through the winter. They have thermostats which are only on low and use very little electric. We like to keep him aired and
sometimes we top up the battery or want the lights on for when I go and tinker with him whilst looking forward to the next outing0 -

M, i think most of the above is about keeping the van plugged in when NOT in it (stored) rather than when in it, as you are....
despite most being hardy souls, they wouldnt be returning from a days outing to a van set deliberately to 'the frost setting'
OT. we are generally home only for short periods between trips so dont bother the heat the van....it probably doesn't have time cool down from the previous trip.....
we have a largish solar panel so dont need hookup at home to keep our batteries fully charged.....
however, if we are home during a prolonged cold spell with a chance of frost, i do drain down the systems.

I can't get past page two on this thread. Has the site crashed again? again? again?
Anyway, I have a small electric towel rail in the 'van that gets left to thermostat itself on and off. This avoids the "ice mattress" effect that one gets no matter how much heat one pumps into the 'van in the hours before a trip.

We never leave the heating on in storage nor do we leave it on during the day on site if we are out and we always switch it off at night and the timer switches on in the morning
Write your comments here...That is useful to have a timer. That's what we could do with. We turn the heating very low at night but it's cold getting out of bed in the morning. A timer would resolve that problem! Also a timer could be set to come on a couple of hours before returning in the evening to warm it up in time for arrival.
