North Lancs flooding and power cuts

i really love my caravan and look forward to every trip away but now I have an extra reason to appreciate it and its facilities. 

Late last Saturday night, the whole district (55,000 ish) properties were plunged into darkness. The cause, as I'm sure many have seen and read about, was the River Lune overflowing its banks and flooding the power substation
which supplies the area.

We awoke on Sunday to a total power blackout including  phones, mobiles and broadband. Using the car radio I discovered that the problem was likely to be with us for 72 hours. What to do? How do we get hot water, cook, keep warm
etc? Answer: use the caravan facilities on gas of course! Which we proceeded to do until power was eventually restored fully- albeit by generator on Tuesday.

My heart goes out to those communities in Cumbria who have suffered much worse fates than just loosing power. I hope they are getting the help they desperately need and my thanks Ho to all the brave and hardworking souls who have
worked tirelessly to bring the situation back to some degree of normality.

    Well said Sir......fortunately I've never been in a similar situation myself so can only imagine what some folks went through.

    All to often "services" are taken for granted without thought for the people who work (every day of the year) to bring and, when necessary fix, these vital services for us all too often in very trying conditions.

    Indeed, well said. Last year spent a week in the van, due no mains. A month prior, I sold my old petrol genny and didnt buy a replacement.

    We have done similar, lived in ours for a week on the driveway when the kitchen was gutted and totally refurbished. The extra space comes in handy when you have a house full as well. Even now the fridge is on to provide extra cooling storage for Christmas.

    It's a good job that your van was at your house, and not in a strorage area with an electronic gate!!

    Reminds me of when we had the caravan in the drive. My wife was halfway through cooking a christmas cake when we had a power cut. I was able to turn on the gas in the caravan and light the oven to complete the job. Made a good cake, one of her best.
