Which is the best to use?

I have 2 7.5Kg Butane cylinders I use for the BBQ,would these be ok to use in a motorhome or should I go for propane ?

Can I exchange Butane bottles for propane ?

Butane will be fine unless the weather is really cold. Are you sure they are 7.5Kg? Calor butane bottles are 7Kg with the equivalent size in propane is 6Kg, although the calorific value is similar. You may be able to swap the butane for the heavier 6Kg propane but not the 6Kg Calorlite propane.

if you camp all winter in cold wether, Propane will gass off better than Butane, which may not work if the temp is low enough...

other thwn that, not much in it.

if you do decide to change bottle (when empty, of course) you will need to change the fitting at the bottle end, unless you are using a bottle top regulator, in which case they might be the same fitting for both types (cant remember that as i have a bulkhead
    fitted regulator)Happy

Hi Mark, Butane can be good to even just a few degrees above freezing but it the liquid doesn't gas off very easily and this can cause problems if the temperatures plummet. Propane is good to well below freezing - although by then you'll have problems with
water freezing etc. We've gone all propane to be on the safe side.

As BB says Butane is fine for summer but I got caught out early November one year with Butane not working at - 4 degrees.  So I swapped and yes you can exchange cylinders blue for red.  Just to offer a other option - if you may use a lot of gas you could
go for a refillable such as Safefill.  I am glad to have gone that route but only if you are likely to caravan away from CC sites.  I am currently off grid with stunning sunset and a field to myself!

    Write your comments here...

Google Calor's web site to see which 'familys' show your bottle and compatible exchanges. Propane is more versatile in terms of cold weather, with no warm weather disadvantage. You won't be able to exchange for Calorlite, but they are much ligheter and hence
    easier to lug about.

In my opinion, the best cylinders are GasLight, formerly BP Light. They come in 5kg or 10kg sizes. They are lighter than CalorLite, transparent so that you can see the level, have clip-on connectors and a far better carry handle than Calor. In fact they,
and some continental cylinders, make Calor look Victorian. You can often get them cheaply on eBay and I saw one discarded at the local council tip the other day.

Unfortunately they are only realistically available at Homebase. but that's fine if you have one close to you. The Dutch are more enlightened and they are more freely available over there.

Not that I have anything against Calor (cue laughter).

May be a stupid question, however would this be the same prices as normal propane bottles? is it only the actual bottles that are lighter and give a visual level of how much gas there is?

my van will take 2 x 7kgbottles, does that mean i would pnly be able to put 2 x 5kg bottles of this in? or are these a different size bottle wise?
