Clip on tables

We are looking at certain caravans (Bailey Orion being one) that have clip on coffee table and or clip on dinning table.

I was wondering if anyone had experience of the durability of these?

I get the impression with kids they may easily break.

I remember when I first went caravaning with my parents, both caravans had this type of table fixing.

From an engineering perspective, it is a very strong connection  (assuming both pieces are screwed along the length with sufficient / suitable fixings) this is because the load is spread out along the length of the fixing and supported at the other end by the leg.

I presume you mean where there is a plastic strip attached to the wall, and the table mates with this.... We have a 2009 Bailey Ranger GT60, and that plastic strip had come away from the wall, with obvious consequences.... took a while to work out how to
securely attach it to the wall (the answer I found was "jack nuts")... after securely fixing it, we haven't had a problem since then!

Thats what I was concerned about. One used caravan I looked at showed signs of the strip coming away from the wall.

Assuming that is all that is wrong, I wouldn't worry too much (personally!). Assuming the wall behind the strip isn't like swiss cheese, you should be able to reattach fairly easily!

    Here is what I got...

    Setting tool

And some short jack nuts off ebay (can't get link as ebay isn't working at the moment!).

We have had clip on tables in three caravans and have had children playing on them with no problems. I would not worry about this.

I had a clip on table on my first van. It wasn't problematic. Anything will break/fail if abused with sufficient vigour. No Greek evenings with dancing on the table and you'll be OK.

I remember my first caravan with its clip on table. Our present caravan has a free standing table which we can use in the awning.

We have a clip on table on our side diner. Hooks on to a metal tube. Our first van, a 5 birth had two clip on tables and over 10 years of family holiday never had a problem with either. I also attached a rail over the above the wheel arch and the smaller
one was also used on there by the kids.

We have a clip-on table in out Bailey Unicorn. The one trouble with it is the single leg which has come away because our dog insists banging against it and forcing it to one side damaging the screw holes, as the table is only made from chip board.

dennisps, what exactly are "jack nuts". Sound as if they may be the sort of thing that I could use.

I just hammer some matchsticks in screwholes and trim to length before rescrewing in these situations

That's just what I've done, (great minds think alike) but could do with a better solution.

    I got mine off
    ebay
... I tried to use matchsticks.... but they just weren't holding, so had to go with the jack nuts, and haven't had a problem since then!

They stock these in B&Q and most other DIY outlets. They are actually fitings to use with a cavity - such as a hollow panel door or the wall of a caravan.

There is another version made of rubber that is often used by caravan makers to secure things (such as lights) to plastic panels.  I know them as "well nuts".

Thanks Nav. Do they come in a variety of sizes?

Both types come in a variety of sizes.  Once one has them to hand the other uses come flooding in!
