A good mapping system?
I am getting to the most enjoyable part of Motor caravanning which is planning my travels for the coming year and I am looking for a mapping application that I can use to build a map covering Caravan sites that I want to explore in 2016.
Can anyone make a suggestion as to which is the most effective method, I like Auto Rout but I understand Windows is not planning to support it much longer. I have looked at Google Maps but can't find my way round them and they use Latitude/Longitude not the
normally more acceptable OS Grid Ref. I suppose that one could rely upon ones GPS although I understand that one can not build a map on the computer and transfer it to my TomTom.

You will need to drop OS Grid if you venture abroad, Brian.
OSM is cheap (see peedee’s link), otherwise you’re stuck with something like Memory-Map. Memory-Map has greater function than anything else I’ve used, but won’t run on a native Mac, and you can switch between different methods of positioning with ease. It
will take time to learn how to exploit its features but decent maps are not free. They use OS maps, which are probably the best you can get and, although prices are dropping, they’re not cheap.0 -
Bing maps offers OS mapping as one of the options under its "Road" drop down menu.

I would try to shake off any hangup about using latitude and longitude coordinates; both clubs have.

Another alternative is Viewranger which uses Ordanance Survey Maps and can be used on a tablet or smartphone. They do maps in road map, 50,000 and 25,000 scales. The latter two are brilliant for walking etc and have the OS Grid reference numbers system. You can download the just the areas you want or buy the whole of the UK. The full 50,000 uk map costs about £84. The advantage is that it works from gps so even if you are walking in the mountains and have no phone signal it will still show your exact position.

Walking! I even joined the Parachute Regiment because I was told we wouldnt have to walk much, we would jump into where we were sent.
