Any solo motorhomes toured the western isles of Scotland?

Write your comments here... Sorry, not this year, there was a very nice trip last year.  This year Solos are doing a tour of South Wales and Yorkshire Dales.

Right having failed to post yesterday I'll have another go. If you are going to Hebrides via Skye the CCC site is a good one right on the lochside and close to the ferry port. I stayed on Harris at Floddabay, run by ex chef from Yorkshire, bit pricey, £25
pn 2014. Has 2 private lochs, one with otters, only 5 vans, saw a golden eagle there. Will cook locally caught seafood and deliver to your van, fantastic. On west coast amazing site at Hogabost, voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world, no electrics and
can't book, just turn up, don't go for the site on the east coast near the ferry, believe it has now been taken over by new owners, but wasnt good. preferred Harris to Lewis. On North Uist stay at Balranald which is a RSPB reserve excellent walk along coast
lots of birds, only place I've heard a Corncrake, not just one but lots, and they "sing" all night right next to your van. The site owner also runs a mobile van selling home cooked food for campers and birders, soup and cakes excellent and will cook your lobster
for you if you catch one. Whilst on the Uists it is worth visiting the Hebridean smokery if you're into seafood. Food shopping is not good on Harris.

Hope this helps, you'll have to join us when you're back and let us know how you got on.

If you look on Diary Dates you will see Meets and Greets where we get together in various numbers.

I started my Outer Hebridean adventure from Stornaway and while the campsite at Col may not have great reviews its position and views take a lot of beating.  There is water to the pitch and as I use my onboard facilities I was very happy there.  It's on
the sheltered side which can be a consideration too!  I will definitely go back one day.  I would park on Barra at the airport next time too.

Rob I hope you find lots of wildlife.  I think my dogs scared off any otters when we were out and about.

Can anyone give some advice.  We have just bought a motorhome, so new to this game!  We intend travelling to Mull this May and have booked a couple of nights at Tobermory and plan to see as much as possible during the week.  Any good advice out there?  eg
on the web it suggests turning up to queue for the ferry from Oban, but wondered if due to school holidays its best to book.

If  you  are  a  brave  Little  Wilson4,  you  could  always  head for  Bunree,  take  the  Corran  Ferry  { Dont  Book,  just  wait  ! }  then  take  the  road  to  "Lochaline"  where  you  should  find  a  little  RORO  crossing  to  Fishnish  on  Mull
    !

For  a  Medium / small  m/home  its  easy  --  just  dont  try  it  with  a  caravan  or  trailed  car.  WHY  ?  well  the  last  time  I  used  it  it  was  still  drive  on  &  REVERSE  off.  Saw  /  Heard  a  lady  driver  in  front  of  me  scream,
leap  out  of  the  driving  seat  &  start  pounding  on  the  car  roof  till  her  laughing  partner  moved  over  &  drove  on  while  she walked  on  very  gingerly  indeed.  It  should  not  really  bother  any  body  now,  just  shove  it  in  first,
shut  your  eyes  &  boot  it  till  some  body  screams  "Stop  !!"

Hi Wilson4 you should enjoy Mull. As ABM suggests you can go round via the Corran ferry way then down to Lochaline it's a nice route but as the Oban to Craignure fare has come down considerably this year it's now only £39 return for my 7 mtr motorhome plus
passengers rather than the £62 one way last year. The Campsite at Craignure is good  and there is a good pub across the road that does very good meals, Iona is a nice visit parking was free last year and it's a short walk to the ferry across. I have driven
round most of Mull in search of wildlife some parts are very narrow but ok with care, I will be back there i couple of weeks on my way back from the outer Hebrides , Rob

Hi Wilson4. You have landed your question in the middle of Solos section and we were discussing the Hebrides but you will get better coverage in UK sites and touring.  Not that you aren't welcome of course just more people will read the question over there. Smile
    Have a great time!

There are a group from the New Companions Camping Club going to Barra today, to Borve Camping site. If they can't all get on to that site there may be some at Scurrival Campsite. They are moving to Kilbride Campsite on South Uist on Friday. There is one of them who has posted on solos in the past.

I hope you manage to come across them.

I have done this route last year and the year before, admitedly on my motorbike but from memory both ferries are now "double ended" if thats the nautical term(!) but you drove off forward on both crossings....

Chris the only date remotely near you is the New Year one at Ferry Meadows sadly now only 3 of us set to go there - but I think the site may now be full - however if you wanted to join us no doubt there will be cancellations.  You would be very welcome

The last time I looked there were vacancies af Ferry Meadows just not on 30th and 31st December so if you were prepared to just go for a three night trial it is probably still possible from 27th to 29th December leaving on 30th.  There is always the possibility
that once there you'll find that late vacancies pop up and you could stay longer.

Hi Chris39B.  Most of the sòlos meets will be well south of you.  That is why I joined the New Companions as well as meeting up with solos when down south. There is a group of them at Edinburgh site just now.  I know that is a long way from Scarborough,
but they do have meets and winter lunches nearer to you.  In fact their National Spring Meet will be at Scarborough in April. Look on their website newcompanions.org.uk for more info.  Enjoy your camping.

Now now Meg you will be in trouble mentioning NC. You probably remember what happened when I tried to help a newcomer a couple of months ago.

Well it hasn't put me off helping. New Companions meet at Chatsworth CC site next week 13th to 20th and I will be there.

We should not be in any trouble mentioning NC as it is a sticky on this page and we are usually on CC sites!  Thats wher over 20 of them are this week and where you will be next week.  I doubt that 20 will have managed to book for Chatsworth as its so busy.

That reminds me to update the NC sticky

Write your comments here... Chris can I just clarify something. Over 4 1/2 years ago a group of caravan club members started a discussion on who went caravanning on their own.  At the time that group actually decided on the name solos and had approached
the caravan club, this was to try to get recognised within the caravan club and to form a group.  It was at the time roundabout this time of the year, that I joined the discussion, and became an active member in getting solos of the ground. This also was roughly
the same time that I representative, I will not give names, started abusing and insulting those who have started solos up.  Many left the group however there were a few that carried on, I was one of them and I defended both  The idea and ethos of solos. I
did talk with Rowena at HQ and it was agreed that solo  would indeed have a section on the forum. It was about this time that the new companions representative drove the peg well and truly between  The new companions and solos. It was also agreed that neither
parties would go on to each other's dedicated posts and try to either upset or poach member.

One thing I did was to include a section for new companions as well as the Phoenix and loners onto the single solo section. Yet withIn hours of me posting the details of the other three clubs, A slanging match once again was created. After another heated
discussion we parted company and never commented about each other's club activities again.

I do know Meg and I have spent Time with a very enjoyable lady, Meg and  other new companion members do talk about different breaks away et cetera,  but not in a negative way or in any form of poaching members from one group to another. It is a mutual agreement
that if the title of a discussion says new companions, then of course anyone can reply to it but do not slag it off. It's the same with solos new companions come to solos discussions et cetera

Write your comments here...sorry for this I have to continue to reply as the forum timed out on me and won't let me add any further posting on the discussion.

Sorry for this I have to continue to reply as the forum timed out on me and won't let me add any further posting on the discussion.

So basically if there is an open discussion with the title does not state either solos or new companions, then either group can reply and actually advertise their club.

If there is an open discussion where the title does not state either solos or new companions, then either group can reply and actually advertise their club.

I do have some very good friends who belong to both solos and new companions, we have chatted about events et cetera and we have never criticised  or belittled each other's clubs. However I do find your comments Chris at little offensive towards me, all
I have done  was made sure that the original agreement between the new companions and solos is upheld. It's a shame that you haven't taken time to read through well over 1000 posts that are still on this forum, to see exactly what I am saying.

Over 1000 posts that are still on this forum, to see exactly what I am saying.

Chris,  can you now see what has happened between the two clubs and why we stick to posting on our own dedicated posts. If you'd like to  contact me I would be most cooperative in trying to help you to understand, that you companions is new companions and
    solos is solos.
