Caravanner of the Year on BBC this April!

We have only just watched the second episode today. I thought it was a bit more serious and practical in content than the first which actually made it a bit more interesting.

We are just watching this now and I honestly don't know what the CC thought they would have to gain by participating in this. The experiences and participants are like nothing I have experienced in my short time of caravanning.....including at Rallies.
This is honestly like something from the 1970s, no disrespect to that era but things have changed. I mean.....competitors comparing it to how armed forces personnel must feel when going to War...just absolutely ridiculous.0 -
Completely underwhelmed by this ridiculous program. Not something to be proud of Caravan Club, and certainly poor form from a chairman who is paid by each of us members to represent us. I actually switched off the second episode rather than watch any more embarrasing,

It was so interesting that it sent me to sleep. If you are an insomniac watch it on catch up tv, you will be cured.

Let's be fair, the first programme was a real embarrassment for the vast majority of decent, sensible and enthusiastic caravanners who throughout the year enjoy the excellent facilities provided by the club. The second programme was better and each of the
participants that entered seemed to be nice people with humour and with a sense of fun. Let's now move on, forget the well publicised embarrassment and continue to enjoy the very good times we can all get from our membership.0 -

We are remembering WW1 100 years on with all sorts of events around the country. I thought this comment was an insult to any of those who stood awaiting the command to go over the top. Very very inappropriate.

Real caravanning or motorhoming in my opinion it wasn't. Let's hope the CC doesn't think it is worth having a second 'competition' or programme .
Someone must be reading these posts as some are modified. Hopefully even if they don't respond to the thread they will take note....... ..........

Did anyone hear the interview with the winner on Chris Evans show? First of all the winner came across as a pleasant individual and I have no problems with them or the other contestants. (Whilst I have views about some of their supposed skills and wouldn't
want to be pitched next to some of them I do not think it appropriate to comment further). However he did say very clearly the semi final contestants were selected by audition. Again no surprise there and I have no problem with that providing it is not then
dressed up as a competition and supported as such by the (not so) great and good of this Club. At the end of the interview Chris Evans made a typically CE style mischievous comment about Top Gear and the competition........0 -
One million members and thats the best we can do!!!!!! Jeremy Clarkson must have wet himself with laughter and screaming " I told you so " at his television. This programme has put the perception of caravannig back years in the publics opinion. To actually
show our chairman ripping the back end off his caravan was totally unbelievable. I am not going to mention individuals as we all must have our best and worst ideas of who they were. I can only assume that this programme was made for light entertainment. But
at the Clubs expence. Maybe next year the competition should be held quietly in a rural setting somewhere in the UK without a film crew in sight.0 -
Actually I thought the worst aspect of this programme was the way it deliberately set up some of the contestants to be made a mockery of. It treated people, as objects to be laughed at. Cruel. The programme makers should be ashamed of themselves.

Second programme was much better despite the Top Gear style stunt of Andy trying to go through a signposted narrow gap. That incident summed up both programmes - they were meant to be lighthearted entertainment. Sad we members take it too seriously. There
was a lovely touch, staged or not, when the classic pair stopped to help a horse rider and again when the motorhomer had to stop for a wee - try doing that in a car! I did like the winning couple.0 -
As I previously posted, I rather enjoyed the programme although I am clearly in the minority here.
I returned to the club two years after a gap of several years. On my first foray into the forums, I was made very welcome and told what a friendly place it was. My experience, so far, has confirmed that. However, reading through the foregoing posts, I am
a little disappointed to see a few less than complimentary comments about the contestants. These are fellow members after all.0 -
I would like to know if any representative of the Caravan Club, directly or indirectly involved with the programme, or the Caravan Club itself , has in any way beneffited financially or in kind?

You have the CC chairman in the MH supposedly watching the proceeding, but didn't notice the driver, who was afraid to let go of the gearstick in case it fell off. This sort of thing should have been mentioned in the final summing up. The whole thing was
a joke as far as I'm concerne. Ray.0 -
Watched the second half for some of the way through, then Deleted User the rest from my HD recorder. It was no worse than the first part, but I think the reason for this is that we all knew what to expect.
As previously stated, the Caravan Club has missed a golden opportunity to present itself to the public and extol the virtue of caravanning in all its glory.
In my opinion these two programmes,parts1&2 have set the Caravan Club back many years.
Lets hope that the Caravan Club are fully aware of its members views and take heed of what the feelings are as expressed in this forum.

Grenville Chamberlain Should resign. The Caravan Club should be ashamed of themselves ! allowing a senior memeber of staff to allow such piffle against paying club members.
I think the programe showed the caravan club in its true light and how they have lost their way with a bunch of old & out of date out of touch personel.
2nd viewing was no better than the first and as for a motorhome owner trying to drive through a 7ft width limit beggers belief ! Stunk of TOP GEAR. why didnt they invite Jeremy Clarkson just to finish it off.
I would like my anual subscription back CC ?

Have to agree with "oldgeezer". Watched both episodes and squirmed most of the time! When do you pitch on level ground to achieve inch perfect gaps? Having driven in HGV comps., there were classes differentiating lengths, etc. How could they do manoeuvering without giving allowances? As for club chairman ripping off the back of his(?) van, beggars belief. It is no wonder Caravanning gets bad press at times if this is how we present it!! My 40 years is now questionable! Oh, and Andy Harris only appears to understand camper vans!!

It did not surprise me in the least that COTY was edited to give maximum entertainment, to the detriment of us caravanners.
What does surprise me is the number of outraged members who are worried about the image it may have portrayed to none caravanners. I certainly do not go caravanning to impress any none campers and do not feel the need to justify why I do go. If you enjoy
it, that’s all that matters.0 -
Given the lack of any response from the Club concerning this matter I have today posted a letter (to the registered address) containing my formal complaint and a request that I be advised of the mechanism by which a member whose actions bring the club into
disrepute can be sanctioned.I can think of no other business or organisation that would tolerate such a gross error of judgement.

According to certain viewing figures only 1.3million people watched the first episode of COTY .It's safe to assume that even less will have viewed the second .In my opinion the only real damage caused was to GC,s "borrowed " van , as you can bet your next
membership fee it wasn't his own.0 -
Hi just read some of the early posts and later ones.Have I missed something,we have been in Tenerife for the past three weeks
still two to go so looking forward to getting back to caravanning.Steve

I should make it clear that my anger is not directed at the contestants - they were victims of cynical manipulation - it is the management who is at fault and they who should be held responsible.

Hi have just noticed all the members that claimed it would be a good program to watch are suddenly quiet know, wonder why?

I don't know about that 'eddietheeagle', Eddie the Eagle in the 1988 olympics didn't seem to do much harm to the continuation of ski jumping
Correct, and how many BRITISH ski jumpers are there ?
That that would be, a whole NONE
