Calor gas prices?

Is there any reason why a 6kg calor gas propane bottle is 21 quid but it's then only 27 quid for a 13kg bottle....so over twice the amount???

I'm no expert on the subject Mike but I would imagine most of the price is related to the cost of the bottles, transport and storage etc. Very little will be for the actual gas product. All those other factors will be very similar no matter how large or
small the bottle. Plus the companies will know the demand for the 6kg is greater than for the 13kg so might milk this fact

It's called " Good business sense " Calor know that owners of UK 'vans can only use the smaller bottles. I have recently purchased a Coachman 560/4 VIP, the gas locker is nothing short of pathetic, Coming from 16 yrs and 7 German caravans where I would carry
a 13kg & a 6kg lite, only using the 6 kg during changeover, now forced to pay the higher prices !!

Its quite a few years since i use any of calors products and i wont on principle.I dont like their attitude to any competition and i am referring mainly to their bad mouthing of BP when they brought out the lightweight gas bottle to the point of stopping
dealers from selling it under threat of loseing their franchise.ALKO are another example of a company that charges astronomical prices for its products and tries to stop anyone else from getting a share of the market.Good business sense you might say but this
is a free enterprise country and anybody who tries to override that does not get my money.

Time to break the stranglehold that Calor has on the market. Go the refillable route. eg, to fill my safe fill 7.5kg costs roughly £6.75.... Do the maths and work out if you could benefit from a swap. By the time you have paid for two deposits (you only
need one safefill as you can see the contents) you are over halfway there. Unless of course you can get bottles cheaper on eBay etc.....Cool

Interesting....might look into this then. What's the initial outlay and would I need different regulators etc?

Initial cost needs to be calculated against how much gas you might use - and the same fittings - except I invested in a Stainless Steel pigtail with wheel instead of nut to fix it on.  There is a very long thread on refillables under the heading of "Tips for Making Caravanning and Touring Cheaper......." third from the top of the list I think.  You can look up the cost of Safefill cylinders on the web - my first cost just over £100 and is the largest and just fits in the locker.  So far never had to refill except when at home.

Its Propane suitable for all year use.   And it can be the same pigtail as the Red Calor cylinders but I have invested in a SS pigtail with a wheel for easy use.

My nearest fill station is about 40 miles away which is a shame :(. I have an LPG petrol station about 600 metres away but I doubt they'd let me fill as it's just Asdas so they wouldn't know about safe fill.  Great idea though!

I too have a Coachman and ran out of gas . At the time I could only get a big 13 kg gas cylinder.. Its a tight fit but does go in !!

For  those who go abroad or do more than the occasional holiday in your MH. Think about re-fillable bottles or an under chassis tank, the difference in the cost and the convenience is worth it.

Our local CC centre did a deal, some time ago, with Jewsons, whereby a 6kg propane bottle is just over £12 which is a significant saving over normal prices.

You were robbed Brian. £4.87 to fill my bottle of the same size last week. Tongue Out

Worked out yesterday I only need to refill twice more and I am saving over Calor prices.

Calor is fine for light users. I like the 3.9kg propane, easy to source on site. Probably costs me no more than £24 spread over my 120 nights and so around 20p a day. I agree for heavier usage it can be quite an expense. particularly with the smaller bottle
sizes. For light users it seems the best option and there are an awful lot of light usage these days.

Write your comments here...but surely ET you have to pay top dollar for your sites which tends to nullify your argument - thats if you are talking cost of course. I guess if you're not using any gas you don't need a refillable but I have to say that I would
not recommend a 'Calor Contract' to anyone now as the cost of it goes a long way towards the cost of a SF cylinder.

Does not nullify my argument at all. We are either on 10 or 16 amp sites by choice. As such little gas used. Like many, no intent to be off EHU.

With the usage of many caravanners why would they faff about by going off site for a refill? Makes no sense. Yes if off EHU I agree

On another thread you did say 'Ours are all steel. We dont run gas enough to justify a lite'.
