Towbar fitting
Having recently purchased a Toyota Rav 4, 2.2cc, second hand I would like to fit a towbar to this vehicle. I have had several quotes locally most in the region of £680.00, including the fitting of 13 socket electrics suitable to the manufactures guide lines. It seems rather steep to me, can readers give me any suggestions or point me in the right direction.I live in the N.W.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but I always fit my own towbars and the one for my Suzuki S-Cross was £300 plus another £100 for electrics kit. So an extra £280 or so to fit sounds pricy but not exactly a rip off.
As long as it's not a cheap clone of course.

Having hunted around for the best deal for a towbar for my 2015 Mondeo Estate I found P.F. Jones of Manchester, (phone 0161 872 4755). They supplied the Bosal swan neck towbar and dedicated 13 pin wiring kit delivered to my home where their mobile fitter
did all the fitting including recoding the car's electrics so that all the sensors etc worked correctly when the caravan was attached. Total price including VAT was £531. It took less than half a day to do without me having to take the car anywhere.0 -
I also purchased a Toyota RAV4 Sept 2015. Looking around for a tow-bar fitter, I was recommended Indepension. Popped into their nearest depot and was quoted around £390/400. This was because my vehicle was still under Toyota warranty, had 3 yrs left. They
advised that I get a specific kit fitted, in order to keep the car within it,s warranty. If your car has NO warranty left, then the price will reduce. They also told me to call back when I had done 500 miles with a caravan on the tow bar, and they would do
a complete check of all the tow-bar fittings etc etc. The only small problem is that I cannot hear the audible signal when using the indicators, when the van is attached. I can still hear the car signal. Depending on what type of electrics are on your van,
they will fit either the 12s/12n or the 13 pin type. I am sure that Indepension are a nationwide company, mine was done near Newcastle Upon Tyne. Pleased with the final result, looks good, and it is the correct height from ground level, about 16". Friends
of mine have the same car but his hitch height is 14", and the van looks like it is nose down when towing.0 -
.... The only small problem is that I cannot hear the audible signal when using the indicators, when the van is attached. .....
Is there one fitted? It's not a requirement to have an aditional buzzer/audible warning ..... you just need to be informed that you have (or not) working indicators and that can be via rapid flashing like your car tells you

Yes according to the fitter, it inside the rear corner area. It is so well insulated at the back. The only time that I can hear it is if the back door of the vehicle is open, then test the van lights/indicaters, with my ear to that side.

Hi, after some while fishing the market, I took your advice and took my RAV to the Lancaster depot of Indepension, sited on the Whiteland industrial estate. Its a modern garage with two bays and the guys there fitted a swan necked PCT detachable towbar within five hours. My final invoice was £325.00, which included 13 pin approved electrics. My local garage was quoting £650.00. It would seem it pays to shop around, although I have yet to hitch up and take my van for a spin knowing that the work is guaranteed. Thanks again happy CARAVANNING.
