Cheap Awning Light
Lidl's have at the moment a 125cm long 25W LED strip light for under £17 It's perfect for an awning light as it is IP65 rated so damp&mositure proof. It is mains operated so needs a plug and switch fitting (if you want a switch) and will need to be plugged in to the external socket on your caravan.but comes with a sealing gland fitting for the cable, even with buying the extra bits its far better than the ones I have seen made for the purpose and cheaper. I intend to use Velcro straps to hang it from.
Hope the info is useful to some.
Ian.

With 25W of LED it should certainly be bright in your awning

Not as bright as you may think. I have tested it in our garden shed and it is far better than the ones I saw set up in the display awnings when we bought our new awning last week. Also for us the more light the better, within
reason. My wife is disabled which affects her walking and coordination among other things, so being able to see the step in to the van clearly when its dark is a must.

There are steps available with in-built LED lights like this: http://www.thecaravanshop.co.uk/steps/double-steps/royal-led-caravan-step/prod_979.html

If the lidl lights above are the same as the ones I looked at last week although they are mains they run off a 12v power supply so they should be convertible if you wanted to.
Lidl also do small battery operated LED's with sensors we have a couple of these in the wardrobes.

Thanks, I have seen those but lighting up the awning is a safer bet as she has taken a couple tumbles in the past from misjudging things.

Thanks, I did think of taking it apart and by passing the LED driver but that then leaves the problem of no easy 12v DC connection in the awning area.

I went to Aten Lighting at the show and spent something like £30 I believe. That bought me a 5 metre length of high intensity bright white LEDs to which I fitted a switch and a length of 2 core cable wired to a 12v plug which in turn pushes into a 12v cig
socket fitted into the Battery box which has a permanent 12v feed. They are put up using reuseable plant ties onto the roof poles of my Magnum awning. Believe me when I say that its like daylight in my awning on the blackest of nights.0
