Melamine alternatives

Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone has crockery which isn't melamine and how well it holds up if so, I am not having much luck with the mugs. They tend to leak quickly. Not sure if this is due to the coffee temperature as I don't take milk or if it is a common issue.

We now use Correlle crockery, as for mugs we use normal china ones, I find tea always tastes funny in anything else.

For cups and glasses we use proper china and glass and we have done that for many years. Melemine stains very easily. However we do use melamine for plates and bowls and we use the same sets for a number of years.

Not got Corelle but picked up some very well priced, plain white, crockery from Ikea which I have seen others compare to Corelle.

Weight's not an issue for us, so we use 'proper' plates, cups, glasses etc. No breakages so far, and we just carry them in the plate rack unwrapped. (Think our current set is blue and white Broadhurst Ironstone, so pretty robust stuff, mugs are Denby). Not
sure how usual we are in this, though!

Still using the melmine ones my mother bought when I was a child.  One mug failed, but we learned then not to microwave them!

Always bought melamine sets for plates/dishes/bowls but we do have proper mugs for tea/coffee and glasses for wine/beer etc. Tend to buy it from Ikea as it is so cheap and very replaceable if mishaps occur.

We have standard crockery and have had the same set in our caravans for 20 years now, with no breakages.

We usually put some bits of foam between the plates when travelling, but probably not necessary.

We carry far more than we need for the two of us. Main plates and side plates are Acropal (toughened glass) 4 of each and 30 years old. We carry 4 porcelain mugs and Highball, tumbler and a smaller glass times three. Desert dishes (4 no) are some kind of
pla\stic and usedfor occasional cold deserts. We also carry 3 wine glasses.

     Melemine stains very easily.

I did warn OH of that, but she  still insisted on 'this lovely melamine set' at a recent show. She now spends ages trying to clean the cups. She has obviously forgotten why we changed to toughened glass for everything 20 years ago on the boat.

Thanks I will check out Ikea. I regularly break crockery at home so probably won't go for the china or regular crockery option. Too great a risk to the dog in a confined spaceEmbarassed I
do like my hot drinks in china though.

Just looking on line and the Oftast crockery from Ikea is 50p per item. A real bargain.

We have Corelle also, but there is a thread elsewhere on here discussing a cheap alternative to Corelle available from IKEA.  These seem well worth a look.  If I can find the thread I'll add a link later.

Just did a count in the 'van and we carry six mugs for the two of us, which is probably quite a lot as we have 17 glasses (most of some kind of plastic). I've been told it is for when we have visitors - which total for this season?  One!.

You will find the IKEA OFTAST range about half way down this page - see HERE..  The individual items are only 50p each (marked in yellow on the page).  I don't think you can order them - just collect them in store.

    Here's a direct link to
    OFTAST
     and
    SANNING
.  Sanning has patterned plates, textured plates, and matching mugs for some of the range.

Both are the same tempered glass, which is what Corelle is made from but even the more expensive SANNING is less than a third of the price of Corelle.

We have corelle but are unsure about its microwave-ability.  Does it work or go into self destruct?

There is also clear (tempered) glass
    FRODIG
and (what appears to be) a 2016 special
    VINTER 2016
(although I can't find a matching dinner plate in this range)
