Walkie Talkie
So our aon is reaching that age where we give him a little more latitude is going around the sites without us having eyes on him the whole time, HOWEVER, we have lost him a couple of times when he has been invited back to a new friends caravan and we lose
sight of him. Therefore we are thinking Walkie Talkies might be a good idea. He is 7 ans wondered if anyone uses them and could suggest a good brand/model.
Many thanks
Reeves

These radios are called PMR radios.
They are all limited in power and therefore range. Motorola do well regarded PMR radios.
Buy from an amateur radio shop not a supermarket and you will get good advice.
Despite being a fully licensed radio ham I have a pair because they can be legally used by anyone and they are good fun.
Range about a mile, less in built up areas. Claims of much more take with very large pinch of salt

I`ll echo the above. We`ve got a couple of Motorolas for our kids and they work well.
I got them from Maplin I think and they`re not overly expensive.

My little girl is seven, I bought two pairs of Motorola TLKR 80 Extreme, I think from ebyer, they were about £55 / pair complete with storage boxes and chargers etc
They are excellent, really robust and bright yellow so you don't loose them. They work up to about two miles.
The kids love playing with them

Errr !! Don't they have mobile phones these day's ??

No cost calls over short distances irrespective of home or abroad and no phone signal required. They do have their attractions. I would imagine they could be useful for people travelling in tandem to keep in contact.

Alternatives
CB radio, range about 5 miles. (Lot's of strange people swearing)
Amateur Radio on 2 metre band about 30 miles. Licenced operators only.
Other bands available but dependant upon conditions (potentially worldwide) Licenced operators only.
Mobile phone, Works I suppose.

There are lots of low cost tracker devices and applications available now. Not foolproof of course, but then there is no guarantee anyone will reply on a walkie-talkie if they dont want to.

I have had a pair of Motorola Walkie Talkie’s for a few years. We use them to communicate between two tow-cars when on long journeys; range can vary from 0.5 to 1 mile.

be very very careful about these walkie talkies things. When we had boat on Windermere we got our daughter (about 12 at the time) one or rather two, just to have fun talking ship to ship with her other boating friends when we were on the lake or barbequing
on the shore. As said earlier they are not secure in any way and you will be surprised how many folk have them one evening a group of lads we think on a campsite close buy verbally abused her with secual innuendo. I would not advise there use for a child.
Furthermore would it not be better to teach your son not to go in anyone's caravan for any reason without yur approval.0 -
If you should decide to use these items from car to car or motorhome PLEASE remember the law is still the same from the drivers point of view !! I.E. No hand-held use if you are behind the wheel !!
Not true ..... https://www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

That web page can be read in two ways due to lack of proper punctuation. I don't think that would stand up in court.

Do you think that Top Gear would have driven on public roads using 2 way radios for al the world to see if it was illegal? 2 way radios are legal to use while driving.
I can't see any ambiguity in ..... 'You can use hands-free phones, sat navs and 2-way radios when you’re driving or riding.'

Your link takes me to the relevant gov.uk page MM BUT in the first line it says it is illegal to to use a "hand held phone or similar device" when driving, riding or supervising a learner driver. That is
my point is'nt it ??0 -

That's MY point and the law

Thats Hands Free MM, the items the OP was asking about are NOT hands free, and I made it clear what I was talking about No Hand Held Use I said and No hand Held use I meant !!
Navigateur, Its pretty standard for Laws to be drafted in the most ambiguous way possible, that leaves it to the courts to decide what Parliament actually meant !

I, for one, would certainly not want to challenge it in court. However, in any event, you can still be prosecuted for not being in proper control of a motor vehicle, if using the device impacts on your driving. Same as you can if you fiddle with the sat
nav or radio and stray from your lane.0 -

Simple answer is yes you may use hand held two way radios. Paragraph 4 of the The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003 defines what hand held devices are and it specifically excludes two way radios.
However, and there is always in legislation a however, if using two way radios whilst driving you may well face a prosecution under section 104 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 in that 'No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive, a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot have proper control of the vehicle...'0
