Hymer/Kampa Awning Problem
Hi everyone, I'm after some help please.
I have a 2007 Hymer Nova 545 and when I bought it, 6 years ago, it came with a Sunn Camp porch awning. Although very lightweight this worked well until, suffering from UV damage, it quite literally fell apart 2 years ago. Having been impressed by the Kampa
range, I replaced it with a Kampa Rally Pro 390, last March, purchased from Norwich Camping for £377.96.
When I first used it in the rain, during a 2-week holiday in Devon last August, I experienced severe water ingress from around the joint between the awning bead and the awning channel. This was due to the bead being much thinner than the channel fitted on
my caravan. The rain literally pours in around the back of the bead, down the side of the van and the inside of the awning, filling up the low level blind pockets, which really should have drain holes fitted, an obvious design fault! I phoned Kampa technical
on two occasions but, despite their promises, they never did get back to me. Reading lots about these awnings needing time to "bed in", coupled with the dry weather we were now experiencing, I decided not to follow up on my query - a big mistake I fear.
During my holiday earlier this month, again over 2 weeks in Devon, I have had the same problem again and Ryan, at Norwich Camping, suggested that Kampa are introducing a filler piece next January for Eriba caravans with similar problems and, because Hymer
also manufacture Eriba caravans, I suspect that they share the same size awning channel.
Ryan gave me a contact at Kampa who would know about this but, despite two phones calls, plus an email, Myles refuses to discuss my problem - not exactly what I'd expect from a reputable company! However, I did manage to get the receptionist, Holly, to speak
to me and although she did acknowledge that I have a problem she suggested that as the Kampa awning does fit most caravans very well it is down to the type of caravan I have and basically that’s my “tough luck”! I explained that I was willing to trial the
new accessory Ryan had told me about on my Hymer this year and I also explained that I would like to know whether the new “fix” would actually work, rather than wait and buy it next year, but I got nowhere.
I'm convinced that my problem is down to the awning bead being far too small in section for the track fitted on may caravan, but does anyone have any experience of this please? Thanks very much for any help and apologies for rambling on for so long.
BTW, the Hymer track is a twin channel, the gap on the outer one which I use measures 5mm and the inner one is 6.5mm.
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul, I too have a Hymer Nova from 2007 and have an Isabella Magnum awning which we have used in many a deluge but have never had the problem you have been experiencing, we are however considering a Kampa Fiesta Air Pro as our son has one on a Sprite
and he loves it, but in the light of your recent experience I will put that idea on hold and would be very interested to how you get on. It's a lot of money to shell out when it leaks so badly. Come on Kampa, get your act together, same must be happening on
some other vans too..0 -
If the awning does not fit correctly then it is not fit for purpose and you may have a claim against the supplier Norwich Camping. It may be worth going down this route and threatening a small claims action to wake everybody up.
It would probably need you to have told them what it was for to be sure of success but even if you did not you are still in with a chance ad it sounds to be specifically for that model if not year.

Hello again, sorry for my delay in replying, I thought that I'd posted a reply last night but it obviously hasn't worked.
Re the fitting of the awning Swifty 123, my problem is down to the size of the awning bead. Unlike a traditional awning, it doesn’t appear possible to tension the awning fabric sufficiently to make the bead seal the gap in my awning rail. Therefore, the
only way I have of sealing this joint is by having a wider bead that will physically fill the gap in the rail (hope that this makes sense)! Before I buy another awning of this configuration I will certainly check the size of the bead and whether the framework
allows the awning to be tensioned from the side of the van.Wildwood and Oneputt, thanks very much for this useful information. I was really disappointed by the lack of interest/help from Kampa and before sending them another email expressing this I did phone Trading Standards. They have been extremely helpful and
told me that I can only seek recompense via Norwich Camping. I have been back to Ryan (at N C) and explained this to him but, concerned as he is about my plight, he hasn’t offered to do anything about it! Before I formally take this route I thought it worthwhile
seeking advice via this website and I’ve also written to Hymer in Germany about this. Their UK agents, Lowdhams, have been initially helpful, but they lost interest when I explained that the solution they offered me (they thought I’d used the wrong track)
was wrong!0 -
Yes I see the problem now regarding the beading, on a normal 'pole awning' you tension the awning away from the van which then pulls the beading into the rail which then completes the seal, whereas with an inflatable awning this is not possible as it is
essentialy a stand alone in respect to the rail. Good luck with it Paul, I hope you manage to get it sorted soon.0 -
That's spot on Swifty. I haven't heard back from Hymer yet, but I'm hopeful. I'll post again when I get further news, but I'm thinking that I need to go back to a more traditional "tensioned" awning.

Hello again. I'm sorry that I've been so long in updating this thread but I've tried to resolve my issue by experimenting with different ways of tensioning the Kampa awning, including attempting to reduce the size of the awning channel on my Hymer by threading
in a seperate piece of plastic alongside the awning bead. Nothing I tried was satisfactory and I've decided that the channel fitted on my caravan is not any good for use with this type of awning. Norwich Camping did listen to my complaints but decided that
they could not help me in any way and the response from Kampa was very poor indeed and I certainly would not recommend anyone to buy products from a firm with such dreadful aftersales service! The awning is now for sale and I'll be buying a traditional framed
awning for next season, probably a Dorema as they look very tidy and good value for money. Thanks to you all for you help.0 -
We had a 2007 Nova it had a double awing Chanel on each side so a total of 4. why I have no idea. But one Chanel was wider the the other
For an awning roof lining?
So very civilised but of course we are talking about Hymers hereHad a roof lining job years ago and it really does add something of luxury.

Makes sense.
Unfortunetely the new Hymer has a grand total of 1 channel.
