UK Maps 1:250 000 scale for Route Planning

I have a set of Ordnance Survey "Road Maps" which cover the whole of the UK (eight maps). Great for route planning and preventing the sat nav doing crazy things (to which it is prone). Sadly these maps (2001) are getting out of date and O/S no longer do
any. Has anyone come across maps of similar scale and quality. 

I don't want a web-based solution and I do have a good atlas but prefer a map

    OS data is still available through third parties at 1:250000, however it is a specialist product and the price is very high. At least £157 for the eight maps. Road maps.  Hopefully someone else will have a more economical suggestion.
