Which Sat Nav is the best?
I'm absolutely gutted as my Snooper has died. I've had excellent service from it for 2years. The instructions are clear. The graphics are clear. She doesn't try and name the roads, like the Garmin, often with ridiculous results, even for the most straightforward.
By the time Garmin has given the name of the road to turn on to, I've forgotten which junction it was off the roundabout. Do all Garmins tell you road names? Has anyone used the Avtex that the CC is now endorsing? Are the instructions as clear as Snooper?
Is there any site that allows us to actually listen to the different sat nav instructions to find one that suits? At £300 I don't want to buy the Avtex and be annoyed.

I cannot comment on the Snooper, but I have the Avtex unit. The instructions are very clear and yes the roads are named, but not intrusivley, I like the fact that you are told to turn at the Stop sign or traffic lights. This I think helps when in strange
places. I used it this year in Germany and Holland and it got me and my outfit to the sites clearly with no problems.I did test it when going to a shop a number of miles away, I used it in both car and car and caravan. It took my through the town when solo and around the back of the town when on outfit, so it does work.
Overall, I am pleased with it, I am sure there is a function you can switch off if you don't want the streets named.

My Garmin is fine and the miss-pronounced French road names are amusing. We were away for a month and on three occasions the instructions were wrong but I expect that this is the mapping software which is common to all. Learned a valuable lesson - always
check the route on the map first because the route the satnav chooses is frequently not the best. I downloaded European sites and ACSI sites from Archies website and it will take you right to the front door. Excellent.0 -
We recently went all the way to Vienna and our TomTom with Camper Maps installed and didn't let us down. We have Archies POI's installed. Its a few years old now and looking at the newer TomTom range they don't seem to have the choice they once did. Garmin
seem to have a better range for what I want but a bad experience a few years ago makes me a bit reluctant.David

Our TomTom Start has started to go wrong. It keeps jumping through the menu screens while driving along.
Also takes forever to update maps.

Ours started to do exactly the same towards the end of our recent trip to Europe. When I got home I did a regular update (not recommended on site WiFi) and we have just used it in the UK and it was fine. It seemed to me that it was having difficulty locking
onto GPS and I wonder if the update cleared the problem.David

If you go onto the TomTom website and look for maps the Camper maps can be downloaded to most devices than can accept an additional micro SD card. There is unlikely to be enough room on the standard memory. The Camper maps don't over write the standard
maps and during set up you have to select which map you want to use. This may seem unnecessary but if you are in a town solo with your car the camper maps might restrict where it lets you go because it thinks you have a caravan on the back or are driving a
motorhome! For this you need to revert to standard maps which is easy enough to do. The Camper maps cost about £50/60 which depending on what model you have is a lot cheaper than being a dedicated camper unit.David

A feature that for me is now a "must have" is the provision to enter Latitude and Longitude cooordinates. I thought this was par for the course but we have found to our cost that the inbuilt system in our Golf Mk7 has not got this very valuable input. With
our caravanning needs a post code is near useless here in the UK and worse than useless in France.Why as the world uses coordinates as the primary location identifier do some satnavs not use it?

You could try asking DVLA for their preferred Sat Nav, since according to the Birmingham Mail newspaper the Driving test will shortly be adapted/altered/changed/improved to include a section on using sat nav guidance in preference
to Direction Sign Posts.Gawd Help Me should I need to retake my test
