Towing mirrors
Can anyone advise on the best towing mirrors for a 2016 Land Rover Discovery.

Hi, not sure if you've used the suction type mirrors but I've been using the same pair of "suck it and see" mirrors for the last 5 years. Physically they're quite compact and easy to tuck away anywhere when not in use but big enough to easily see what's going on behind you at a glance.
I've never had an issues with them falling off or coming unstuck, even at speed. They also come in their own little protective bags which is a nice touch.
I think I paid around £25 for them and so far have had no reason to change them. Best of luck whatever you get.

There are many threads on this here and elsewhere - the Milenco seem universally approved, and at £35 at the Scottish Caravan Show not a dear purchase.

totally agree Geoff. Even my Citroën multispace with van type mirrors is perfectly good without the stupid things. What are these overtaking mirrors you mention

Write your comments here...Made by Millenco and found in most caravan shops, they look a bit like the old racing mirrors, sort of aeros cut in half which screw to the outer edge of your door mirror. Cheaper than aeros too!

For those of you that dont think they require towing mirrors i suggest you take note of the following:-
Many caravanners treat towing mirrors as something that they can do without but the law says different. There is a legal requirement for you to have mirrors that allow you to see clearly an area that is 4 metres wide from the side of your caravan at a distance 20 metres behind the driver. A caravan is significantly wider than a car even a large 4x4 and you simply can't comply with the law unless you fit towing mirrors.
A Land Rover Discovery for example is 2.18 metres wide to the tip of its mirrors (berlingo multispace 1.72m to tips of mirrors) and a typical caravan is 2.3 meters wide. This leaves a significant blind spot wide enough to miss a car, cyclist or motorcyclist. If you pull out on a motorcycle that is committed to an overtaking manoeuvre because you can't see them in your blind spot they are in a very vulnerable position.

interesting though, last summer a traffic cop (who is also a caravanner) wandered over at a m'way services to admire my mirrors and totally agreed with my philosophy. Aren't our police wonderful? One last point (promise) my old clip-in-with-rubber-band type had a nasty blind spot where the outer overlapped the inner and I so very nearly took out a young boy-racer in an Audi on the M1, no blind spots with these

its not the people who make the effort that i have an issue with Geoffeales(as i am sure your overtaking mirrors are more than adequate on your particular vehicle) its the ones who dont think they need anything at all that are the issue!! having spent 40yrs
plus in the motor industry several as a motorway breakdown patrol you cannot have too much rear vision. I even have rear view cameras on the caravan0 -

I tow with an X5 which is not exactly small either, but has BMWs own tow mirrors which take seconds to fit and are excellent. Always check your car manufacturer before turning to aftermarket-mirrors are often available and fit properly

I noticed the Milenco advert in the August issue of the club magazine which said that they had a new updated clamp for the 2016 season and existing Aero mirrors could be updated by ordering the new clamps part number 4589. They also said (on their website)
that these were especially suited to the new 2016 Land Rover Discovery.I have a set of Milenco Aero mirrors that I bought in 2010 and I have just had delivery of a new 2016 Land Rover Discovery, so I ordered a new set of clamps on line, as suggested, at a cost of £28.75. They arrived a day or two later. However, on checking
them I discovered that they are EXACTLY the same as the 2010 clamps except they carry the part number 4589. I have emailed Milenco for an explanation but - guess what - I have had no response. So beware if you are tempted to 'update' your Aero mirror clamps!0 -
I have tried contacting Milenco again and have got a reply. They tell me that the clamps are different - they have a very thin rubber stuck to the clamp face. So thin that I didn't really notice it. However, the clamps do work and I wonder if it would have
been easier to get some self adhesive thin rubber stickers and put these on to my existing ones? Hindsight is a wonderful thing (mirrors - get it!!) - sorry couldn't resist that.0 -

Milenco grand aeros (flat) with extended arms.
Did not know about extended arms - are they available only from Milenco rather than caravan shops? I could do with the mirrors out a bit yet on my Discovery as I want to see more of what is behind the 'van.

I've had Suck it and see mirrors for about 5 yrs too. Never had a problem with them. Some of the 'copies' are not as good and so give problems I understand- buy original 'Suck it and See'
