Motorhome wifi - iboost system
im considering this (type of) system to provide long range wifi recption back into the van.
has anyone had experience of this (directional or non directional) kit?.....any comments, good or bad...
i realise its quite expensive at £160, but if good and lasts (say) ten years thats £16 not to have to walk to office wifi systems ......
im also considering adding a FON router at home to allow me to make use of FON hotspots all over Europe...
again, anyone using this (or the two together) with any great success....?

I've had an iboost for the last five years and it's still giving a sterling service. As mine is plumbed in long term, the bolts on the adjustable antenna bracket rusted so I've replaced them with stainless. It's very easy to set up and once the software is plumbed in takes minutes to put the antenna and switch on. There are leds on the antenna to help in fine tuning, it's very easy. In all it's a pretty decent package, and above all, Adam at motorhome wifi is a very helpful chap and will sort any issues quickly. I'm going to get another one this winter for touring so I can leave one plumbed in on my site.
Almost forgot, another plus point is more secure browsing and being able to log five devices onto it at the same time. It will find a lot of signals from a good distance but if they're rubbish signals you just get a stronger rubbish signal. I use our excellent club wifi for a signal
and it is a great improvement on that.0 -
JK, thanks for the feedback...i met Adam at the NEC one uear and did give it some consideration back then...
since then, ive 'negotiated' loads of data on my sim deal and, vanning in the uk, for the most part, we no longer need wifi....
signal is usually good enough to do what we wish, but we do spend time away and the roaming charges are currently an issue (for a little while yet) overseas.....so we tend to use more wifi there...
the decision will be weighing up the value of the wifi kit (plus a Fon set up) to take full advantage in Europe against struggling on intil roaming charges are ceased....2017?

I use a set up by solwise. It's a lot cheaper but it's not permanently fixed. It works well - picked up BTwifi quite some distance away

cheers, Jay....this sort of thing is an alternative to the MHwifi set up which is good but expensive.
can you put a measure on 'some distance away'?
i realise this is a bit like a length of string but i did read that the MHwifi unit (directional) 'should' pill un from a km away.....
how does the Solwise (rocket?) terminate....just a usb plug?
this would be fine for a laptop but for our ilads and iphone we would need some sort of repeater to generate a hot spot.

We reached a BTFon hotspot and remained connected for the weekend when staying at Uttoxeter racecourse so I'd guess a couple of hundred metres. We could 'see' wifi much further but it wouldn't connect reliably. I think that's the case for most devices. It will amplify the signal but won't improve quality
The rocket plugs into a repeater/adapter/router which should be linked from the aerial page. It's about £40 I think and IIRC 99 devices can connect to it.
I'm pretty certain the rocket has been updated with something new so I'll consult Google and post back

If you are fluent in chinglish there are suitable repeaters/routers on eBay for not much money. A friend uses one with a rocket (which has been discontinued and replaced with the patriot)

thanks again....has a quick look a noticed the rocket was now discontinued as ypu say...
ha, the wifi at this site is 0.3mile away (500 ish yds) though it is a huge acreage.....shanks pony i reckon, lol.
i will have a good look when we get back.....cheers.
