Posting a heavy awning

I'm just wondering if any club members have got advice on the cheapest means of posting an awning. It's a very large Isabella Penta awning with 3 bags of steel poles that we no longer have use of and I would like to send it to my niece in N. Ireland as it
will fit her new caravan. Do couriers charge by weight and size like Royal mail does? Can anyone recommend a courier or have a rough idea of the cost? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hello Annie 33, Hermes Parcels will give you an online quote also they have lots of collection points without going miles to a central depot.

Thank you Rob. We need to get the awning down from the loft to get the size and weight. Just don't want to waste a lot of time packing it all up and then find it would cost far too much to send.

Anyone out there had to send a large, heavy awning and able to tell me if we're talking silly money?

A couple of year or so ago, I sold a small filing cabinet on ebay and the buyer agreed to my terms which included a certain amount for courier.  I just 'wrapped' it in black plastic and put a huge delivery label on it and a courier came to collect it.

I should imagine you can do exactly the same with your awning and the courier was cheaper than Royal Mail.

Like Rob above I have used Hermes quite a lot for sending goods which I have sold online. There are size restriictions but I am sure they would include and awning. You can get a rough idea of the weight by using bathroom scales.

Sent a porch awning by My Hermes last year.  Very inexpensive.

I suggest you try  http://www.md-couriers.co.uk/ who have given good service in the past for unusual items.

Hermes do however have a weight limitation per parcel of 15kgs and also the following size limitation

We can carry parcels that weigh up to 15 kilos each and up to 120cm in length, but we cannot accept parcels that weight more than 15 kilos

Try:-  www.parcel2go.com, they will give you best price for multiple couriers. Use them all the time.

Thank you so much everyone. It'll definitely be more than 15kg so think we'll have to try to weigh the individual bags on the bathroom scales and contact some couriers to see if they can do it. I'll certainly try the company that Navigateur suggested. Thanks.

    +1 for Parcels 2 Go

But you will need to know each parcel size and weight to get a quote.

Is it worth trying to find a local Irish company near you who may have vans going back and forth. A search on the internet might prove worth while.

Thanks for your help everyone. I was also recommended to try Parcel Monkey and they have found that Parcel Force will deliver it if I pack it in 3 separate parcels for about £30. That seems an amazing price and they even pick it up from the house the next
day and deliver it within 48 hours.
