What tyres
I need to get new tyres.
The size is 185/65 R14 6PR 93N
To fit a Bailey Ranger. Any suggestions as to the best to get, the only ones I can find are Maxxis or Security. Very little to choose between them. As the mileage is going to be low ( not same use as car tyres ) therefor life of tyre will be over before
the tread is even prtially worn. ie. Max of 5 years. Are the budget tyres the best bet to buy.
What do you all think

I think that budgets are a mistake, although I have no evidence to prove that statement. However for the sake of peace of mind I try to find the less expensive so called premium brands.
The price range within that class is fairly wide and I cannot see the point in fitting the dearest when as has already been said they will fail through aging long before they actually wear down.

Do all tyres degrade similarly as they age? That presumably would only be the case if the methods and materials used in their construction was the same.
My experience is that they don't, some degrade quicker than others. I had some Matadors which showed wall and inter tread cracking very early in life compared to the Michelin replacements and the current Goodyears. The former were distressed after 3 years the two latter were not after 7 years though changed anyway.

I am having to change a perfectly good pair of Conti's just because the date on the tyres tells me that they are aprroaching 7 years old, what a terrible waste. So why do I say that? I purchased this van privately and the seller who for personal reasons was giving up caravanning and had not used the 'van at all in the last year he owned it but just prior to his last year the caravan manufacture did a recall on the tyres fitted to the van and changed all three FOC but they were never used in anger. I purchased the 'van just under three years ago and have used it since that time whilst I was putting it on the axle stands I noted the date code indicates these tyres as I said above are 7 yrs old in April! so the 'new' tyres must have been made at least three years BEFORE they were sold! So here I am having to replace these perfectly good tyres just because they have now reached the 5 years.
I am replacing them despite having taken an tyre experts opinion on the condition although it annoys me to throw away something that is perfectly fine but IF any thing happens that is slightly connected to tyres then we all know what the insurance outcome would be.

Since even budget tyres have to meet a certain standard to be legal I replaced my caravan tyres with them. Its not as though I'm going to be slinging it into corners or need to worry about speed or tyre noise. For most of the time there sitting still. A
named tyre doesn't always mean better and if your unlucky a nail doesn't discriminate against what tyre brand its lodged in.0 -
TF Tend to agree with you, been caught out with cheap buys before.
OCSID Well that's the problem over 6 years old look fine but – don't know, can see inside.
FUR BALL I can understand your point of view and yes they do a lot of standing around, it's a few thou ££ of caravan not an old trailer you take to the tip. So – I'm a little bit on the fence.
TREPANNER I have a similar problem, only got the van last year hardly been used tyres look new. But stamped (4308) 2008 yr of manufacture. So today I took the wheels off to have a good look, can't see any cracking or damage to the tyres. In fact the tread is so unworn you can still see the injection pips on the top of the tread, as for the spare it's never looked at tarmac still got the paint marks round the tread. Now what, do I risk another year or change them. Bearing in mind I have and can only do a visual inspection, what's the inside like, have the tyres been kerbed at any time, is there internal tread separation I can't see. What about the new tyre choice budget or better quality, as the probability of quite a lot of motorway travel I think I am veering towards better quality. After seeing this whilst trawling around the net.

I know you can't legislate for punctures but I think it's the best to fit the original type tyres back on as the above link. If it was just getting a puncture I wouldn’t worry but the consequences can be a bit severe as in dead.
Thanks for the feedback

You have been looking at my tyres I am not going down the budget route but mid range. It is interesting that the tyres quoted
by Bailey were (and perhaps still are) 'Mid Range' even more interesting they were the ones replaced (as mentioned in my post above) free of charge due to them having a manufacturing fault.0 -
New tyres have been fitted + valves and balance. I did get the same as originally fitted Maxxis. As the link above, Bailey say that they class them as a Premium Quality tyre. So should negate any problems with insurance or DOT checks. A bit more expensive
than budget but still reasonable at £180.00 for three, taken over 5 – 6 years with luck not a lot in the scheme of things.0 -
Sorry guys think I've misunderstood and then advised with my first post on here, when you asked about budget and I said that's what I fitted I think we have a different idea of budget because it seems that your classing sixty pound tyres as mid range when
that is a budget range to me. Sorry for any confusion but just goes to show how different we all view things. It seems redkite that Bailey recommends them so you should have no problem.0 -

Where do Uniroyal come in the range of cheapo to premium then? They are what I've just fitted to one of my cars & I didn't think they were budget .......

Haven't a clue mm, I personally class budget at 50 to 70 pounds mid range 70 to 100 and anything over that as absurd! Am I right probably not but it's just my personal view and I was just trying to clear up any possible misunderstanding that could have
arisen from my first post however you seem to want to quote one line of a post to serve your own cause. I reiterate for those who wish to take umbridge, this is a personal view and has no scientific, mechanical or specialist information to back it up, I am
not in the motor trade, engineering sector or compounds industry and I don't have a fancy title or lovely letters after my name, I don't even have A levels. There hope this make you happy MM.0 -
I got these tyres because they were the best of the only two/three types of that size I could find. Seems very little choice, unless somebody knows different. Bit immaterial now.
The article from Caravan News I quote,
Bailey has fitted the premium quality Maxxis Trailermax tyre on all of its models since November 2001. This is a dedicated trailer tyre that has been designed specifically for the caravan market.
This to me meant that they should be a good buy, and keep the original fit which seemed to have lasted OK. ( no obvious deterioration due to atmospheric conditions )
As for quality, I think Bailey might have sued for misrepresentation if they didn't agree with article.
How do you measure quality, Tyres in general, by type or by size. You need a statistician for that answer I think.
The only thing I could go on was choice -2 maybe -3 and Price. So that was Budget (or cheapest ) £45. Premium ( as per article ) £60. That work’s out at 33% increase in the price, that to me is quite a bit more than budget. In my view given the choice I
could say it is premium. ??Why three new tyres. Original tyres Stamped (4308) nearly 8 years old, keep the original spare for potentially a further 8 years. It might look OK now but next year or later who knows. Also if (i hope not)get a puncture an I call AA RAC or whoever to change
the wheel and the tyre is declared unfit ( age condition ) I am stuffed. Then £ 60 is cheap.0 -

All depends what you want from the tyre & what it's being fitted to. My other car has tyres that are around £200+ each ..... whether that's absurd or not, that's what they cost.
