SKY HD box in caravan
I have regularly taken my Sky HD box on caravan trips and it has worked fine. Although HD requires two cables to the LNB and my caravan transponder has on a single cable I was able to view channels with a reduced service for eg could not record or view some
information about programs. This last trip to Edinburgh I got the Sky signal and the program ran for a few minutes and then froze and the box became locked and could only be switched off at the mains plug. Is Sky now identifying location and controlling where
the box will/will not work. Considering the size of subscription and it is only being used at one location by the subscription holder it would be unreasonable to deny access.

Tirril, dont know of (nor have experienced) any changes in service.....however, we do have a twin LNB dish in the van, so have all recording and 'other' features....
i am using the box at the moment with no issues.
i have a vagie recollection that ypu have to set the box to 'single input only' and the cable shpuld be into 'sat 1'??

I take my sky box and never had any problems , , have recently upgraded to 2tb box and was talking to the sky engineer about using the HD box in my caravan and asked if they could know if it was being used somewhere other than my home address and his answer was , no they can not
you you only need the phone line connected to the box in the first 12 months of contract ,after that you can if you want to unplug it

Many thanks BB. I may have to update my transponder to HD but the current one has an Easy Find light which I find good to set up the sat dish. I haven't found a twin LNB with Easy Find system. My procedure is to tune to the Astra 28e sat which pulls Sky
in and undeed I was getting a good signal, albeit on one Sky input.0 -
both the points i highlighted (correct feed and menu change) are mentioned in this tutorial....
How to set your Sky+HD box to operate on a single cable feed from the LNB.
A Sky+HD digibox is ideally to be used with two cable feeds from your satellite dish. This allows you to use the full potential of your Sky+HD box, and allows you to watch one channel and record another at the same time.
However, in some cases, especially in community satellite installations, it may not be possible to have a second cable feeding your Sky+HD box.
So you have to set uyour Sky+HD digibox to "Single Feed Mode" to tell they SKy+HD digibox that you are only using one feed.
Having only a single cable to your Sky+HD box can cause some problems, such as the "No satellite signal is being received" on screen error message, if you do not tell your Sky+HD box that you are only using a single cable.
Note that this option is only available on Sky+HD boxes, and not on Sky+ boxes.
This is the process to set your Sky+HD box into single feed / cable mode.
Make sure your sky cable is plugged into Dish Input 1
Press Services on your Sky remote control
Press 0, 0, 1, Select on your Sky remote control
This will enter the "secret" hidden Sky Installers Set Up menu on the Sky+HD box.
The Setup tab will now be highlighted
Press down on your Sky remote control and highlight the Single Feed Mode
option
Press the Right-Arrow on your Sky remote control and change it from OFF to ON
Press the Green Button on your Sky remote control to Save the settings
A warning message will appear informing you that you are changing the Single Feed mode
Press Select on your Sky remote control
Your Sky+HD box will now switch-off and reboot.
Leave the Sky+HD box for a few minutes whilst it reboots
Press the Sky button and start to use your Sky+HD box in Single Feed Mode0 -
I dont think its a problem with Sky as I used ours on one cable without any alterations in Portugal until the footprint was valtered.
Write your comments here... Thanks David - I had found on occasions that I had to switch the single input coax from the dish to the second input on the Sky box. Mainly however it was the left hand side one (when looking at the box from the front). Of course
you have reduced facilities ie not being able to record and also the programme information was missing on some channels. I am trying to source a new LNB which is dual lead and also has the Easy Find led. If unsuccessful I will forgo the Easy Find and just
use a sat finder meter.0 -
Couple of points here:
1. My f-i-l has a Sky+HD box working with only one input, it has never been set to single feed mode, and has never thrown up any error messages. He is only using it for the FTA channels as he lives in an area with poor terrestrial coverage - or at least
it was until DSO.2. You only need to have your Sky box connected to a telephone line if you have premium channels, e.g. films and sport, otherwise it matters not once it has been activated. If Sky contact you to say your box has been off line you just tell them you switched
it off at the mains whilst you have been away - for safety. Note that the box is still active even when it is showing a red light.0 -
Hi, we switched to Sky Plus and used to follow the procedure detailed above to change to single input, but found it a Nuisance. Easier to get a new LNB and twin cables. You will then be able to watch and record just the same as at home. We use Roadpro
for our purchases. Also we have never needed a sat finder, we just use a compass and usually have it sorted in a few minutes. Good luck!0 -

its use is for (in part) ordering box office movies and events etc.
for watching movies and sports, the phone line isnt needed, we use ours in the van with no phone line with no problems, and have the full range of our premium channels.

Using a Sky HD box away from home seems a well established practice judging by the previous comments. The Sky box needs 240 v supply so using it without a mains hookup appears more of a challenge? I guess a suitable inverter attached to the 12 v supply could
be used but suspect that the drain on battery will be excessive. Sky advertise that the HD box requires 45w which using 12v would amount to 900W. This implies to me that a typical 100/110 amp hour battery will not last long even with the 100W solar panel I
have.Does anyone have experience of running a Sky HD box off mains? I would like to here about your experiences
