Hurrah for the club

That does sound ridiculous.
To be honest, I do tend to pitch where I want not where the warden wants ev en on C&CC sites. Try a big smile and tell the warden you are learning the violin. Daft as sounds (pun intended) the wardens know you are having them on but it breaks the ice and once someone is smiling at you it's very hard to say no to you.
Having said that, I have chosen sites other than C&CC because of their "we will choose not you" attitude.

I have been critical of the "commercialisation" of the club in the past & still think it has lost it's way a bit. BUT where else can you find such a variety of sites the length & breadth of the country with guaranteed high standards & the ability to stay
from just one night if the mood takes you. That's why I'm still here after 15 years !0 -

Perhaps the van insulation is a bit rubbish and they are huddling together for warmth.

While we were in West Norfolk ,we thought we should check out the c&cc site , management was ok ,but decided it would still not be for us)because the way it was explained to us by the "staff " and to our friends (ex cc wardens) the cc club is streets ahead
with the way it's run for the members and the c&cc is not as "friendly" as the publicity would like everyone to believe0 -
I once asked someone on a C&CC site why they were pitched so close, they said the warden had told them about the "six metre rule".
Silly beggars thought it meant they HAD to pitch six metres away from the next unit. I explained it meant six metres MINIMUM not MAXIMUM.
Could that be why they were all so close I wonder. Mind you there is a strong "herding" instinct with some campers. Perhaps they are scared of the dark
..it is something to do with the herding instinct whenever we have used cls (a lot less as we have got older) they could be an acre big and we the only one but the next arrival pitches 20ft away

Ian - it was Stoke Fleming (Dartmouth). In fairness, the warden did let us choose a pitch - which we did - on the edge of the 'field' and that was fine to start with. But after a day or two, he then filled up the spot directly in front of us even though
there was loads of room on the opposite edge. Couldn't understand why and, as I said, they were so close together. Only one water point per section of the site and only one CDP for the whole site - in the toilet block. No dog walking facilities at all and
the road outside is busy and fast - despite a supposed 20mph speed limit with no footpath to speak of. Exit from the site is positively dangerous, being on the apex of a bend at the top of a slight hill and therefore no view to the right as leaving. We definitely
won't be going there again.0 -
Goodness knows why the warden positioned vans like that but the Stoke Fleming site was a commercial site that C&CC took over a few years back. Perhaps the facilities are a work in progress?
In fairness, the roads in that area are far from ideal for towing on, as anyone who's been to other club sites nearby will testify, and I would expect nothing different there. It's certainly not a fast road by any stretch of the imagination but it is the only road usable along that coastal section so carries a fair bit of traffic, including busses.

I've had a rethink since my previous post. Isn't it the norm for C&CC sites to only have one CCEP and usually it's at the facility block?
I recall being pleasantly surprised when we joined CC to find disposal points incorporated into the service points on most sites. That's a plus for CC.

No it's not the norm just to have one disposal point but both clubs have sites that do just have one. There is an aerial shot of Stoke Fleming on the C & CC web site where the spacing looks fine. It's not a site to choose if you have dogs because dog walking isn't easy around there and the local beach has a total dog ban. The Slapton site, a bit further on is good for dog walkers, the beach is accessible and there is the nature reserve over the road where dogs on leads are welcome. Both sites have good bus routes into Dartmouth and Kingsbridge/Plymouth. The Slapton site is much more peaceful as it's away from the main road and just a short stroll from the village with two good pubs and a shop.

Indeed.
I beg to differ, Brue, on the number of CCEPs on C&CC sites and can think of several where there is only one. I consider it the norm for C&CC but not for CC. Granted, there are exceptions on both sides but I'm talking about the norm and CC, in my opinion, does far better.

Well it's a question of name that site then... but seriously does it affect anyone that much? I can't say I've ever booked a site with either
club based on the number of loo emptying points.I doubt it affects anyone much unless they have to queue. I was making a point in keeping with the topic 'Hurrah for the Club', that's all - no big deal.

And that's what I was doing in mentioning it. OK no big deal - but it just made me realise the things that I have taken for granted on Club sites in the past. Most of the commercial sites we have stayed on have also had better facilities.

Having just returned from Scotland where the first 3 weeks were spent on non CC sites and then ending on the CC site at Bunree I certainly think our Club provides the best experiences. Each evening returning to the caravan you could only guess how close our neighbours would site up - the nearest was 8 feet away. It was like being in a supermarket car park. By comparison Bunree was a joy with plenty of space maintained by the peg system!. Yes we have rules in the club but they are there to maximise everyones enjoyment. Much to enjoy!

I'm so chuffed with them, I'm thinking of popping in to say hello and give them all a big hug when we're down that way in a couple of weeks.
Have the kettle on, Rochelle
Milk, no sugar for me.......
A bit of nice cake would go down well, too......

That's great Rochelle and a lot of kind words are well earned. However do our grumbles get to someone who could deal with them - or should we write to the CC seperately?
Your "grumbles" get passed on whenever I see them! But of course if you have a complaint or a suggestion then please write to the relevent department, as it is likely to be dealt with more quickly.

As a CL Owner, I normally only read the 'CL' section of CT, but reading through this thread has been a very positive experience. I know that many CL owners work incredibly hard to give their visitors a worthwhile experience, and I hope they are equally
encouraged. There are (of course) a wide variety of sites in the CL network, some are very basic, some much more sophisticated with many facilities. Some are hugely popular, others are less busy. Most CL visitors know that doing their research,
and reading the reviews will pay dividends & help them choose a CL that suits their needs and budget. When you have stayed at a particularly good CL, providing a review will be much appreciated by the owner.
I'm sure any prospective CL owner reading this Thread will be pleased to see them often referred to as 'Little Gems'. Lets hope the Club continues to support the CL network with new initiatives that will help it both improve
and grow.I for one hugely enjoy being both a CC member and a CL owner showing members who visit our CL the beautiful surroundings & walks here in the Chilterns AONB.
