What are the limits ?

We were on a clubsite last weekend and were surprised to see a pretty large (7.5 ton approx)  horse transporter with accommodation turn up. No problem at all and this is not in any way a complaint but it did make us wonder what the limits are if any.

Does that weight include the horses or not?

One just as you describe turned up at a very basic CL-style site we were on back in March.  However instead of horses, they had 5 dogs!.  (Pleasant owners and well-behaved dogs).

I haven't seen that for several years, Euro. Are they still around? It used to be a regular visitor at North Ledaig and I've seen it in Eire.

It was at North Ledaig last time we stayed! A site to behold indeed! Some of the big fifth wheelers we saw on Exeter Racecourse were pretty hefty as well!

I saw a large horse box at Poolsbrook a couple of years ago but it had been converted to a motor home. Instead of 'Horses' on the front it said 'People'

We were at the Camping in the Forrest site Cobleland at 5he bank holiday and a horsebox booked in and used a hard standing pitch there. No horses so they must just have used the accomodation bit.

I think it was the height that surprised us rather than the length. I would post  a photo but don't know how to :-(

I would have expected it to be covered by the site length restrictions, don't know of one for weight. Might get interesting on grass if no h/s available.

Don't these units 'horseboxes' go to events where horses run on grass, often across the grass? My wife works next to a builder of these things, they don't need a special licence to drive and are pretty empty, until you put horses in, so I would guess they
are lighter than a similar sized, diemensional wise, MH.

The people driving them will be experienced as well. We used to go to a lot of horse events, seldom saw anyone having problems.

Write your comments here...There was one at the site we were on near Carnac two years ago and another one last year at Turckheim so, yes, they are still around.

I think there is something about non-standard stuff in the rules. If its ahorsebox and they are living in the living area and the horse area is empty it wouldnt be non standard but if the whole thing has been converted for human use presumably it would.

The 7.5 tonne shouldnt be too much problem - a lot of RV's are well above that.  Ours was small at just under the 7.5 but we never had much issue with it unless the ground was really wet.

There didnt used to be any restrictions on CC sites - if you could get it on it was fine, then the CC decided to put length restrictions on their sites which was a pain.  No weight restrictions (as yet) though.

As a warden on the site where this was pitched, you need to be aware this is a professionally converted horsebox. The rear end has the facility for two horses. I have seen the interior !...

Cant see why it matters myself - each to their own and all that. If it was a horse trailer with folk sleeping on straw in the back it doesnt make any odds to others surely

It's a very nice looking horse box I must say! Can't see any baler twine dangling, so my guess is the horses are elsewhere!Happy

As long as they have paid there site fees and it fits on the pitch I see no problem.

Nor me but there are more than a few folk on here who seem to be anally retentive about things that arent quite a standard white box and will bang on about it being an eyesore, blocking their light etc.

The club do insist on vehicles being professionally converted, so for example a vivaro van with a mattress on the back floor is not considered a conversion. The criteria exists to prevent poorly converted outfits becoming a hazard on site??

Very skeptical about this - professionally doesnt necessarily mean well done. A lot of enthusiasts take much more time and effort in their work than so called professionals. Some vans are well maintained, others less so, and obviously a poor;ly maintained van might be more dangerous in terms of gas leaks etc,  but I cant see why a non professional conversion would necessarily make it be a hazard to others on the site.  More like club snobbery I think.
