Freelander
considering an old freelander as a second car not specifically for towing BUT was wondering if anyone has towed with an 02- 05 ish 1.8petrol also what would the tow weight be

I would have thought you would be better off looking for a 2L diesel one. (BMW engine I believe) I have had 2 FL1's over the years both were 2.5 V6 petrol and not that great on fuel and both in my ownership had Head Gaket failure. Lots of issues with FL1's
with the IRD (part of the 4X4 transmission) as well..0 -
I have had 2 Freelander 1's both with the TD4 engine and towed with both without any problems, infact they were very good and very comfortable. I have had the pleasure of driving a 1.8 petrol while mine was in for a service, and it was just about the most useless gutless heap of junk I have ever driven, no way would I want to tow with it. If you can get one go for one with the TD4 engine, so much better.

My advice would be to keep well away from F1's. The car has some great features, heated front screen, split roof lights, but shockingly poor reliability on transmission. We ended up running ours around in just two wheel drive, and couldn't wait to trade
it in to be honest. We never got round to towing van with it because it was off the road so much. We love LR vehicles, but that was a shocker. Take a look at older Jeep Cherokee's as a possibility?0 -
We had an early Discovery like that, got up hills, but chugged rather than flew!

great info glad I asked, so consensus is f1 is junk hence the fact that there cheap.
I want / need a 4x4 not for towing minimal mileage per annum so mpg not an issue, up to 2.5k if possible. Will I get a disco or lander with 2l diesel for that ??

To conclude that the F1 was junk is incorrect, for goodness sake the vehicle has been out of production for nine years, things do wear out on all vehicles.I had three F1's, all diesel (would not touch 1.8 petrol), towed all over europe with them and they never
let me down, even the original L series diesel was a good towcar albeit a bit vocal.0 -
We had our F1 when they were still in production. Loved the design, but oh the problems we had with transmission. We just couldn't rely on it. We got one holiday out of it, and that was to a cottage, not towing. It was traded in for a Jeep. Still see a good
few around though, so some obviously had no problems.0 -
are the petrol ones really that bad ? I don't need loads of power I just need cheap and cheerful off road ability. Not going green laning or anything but muddy field type thing . There a very good price
Write your comments here...The ones I owned had a habit of the tail gate window opening when left parked. Electric sunroofs fail quite often, always when open and door window regulators are prone to fail. My last one, a 2003 reg started to have auto box issues when cold until it warmed up as well. for what you say need I would look for a manual diesel face lift model. Like said already lots had IRD issues and owners took the rear propshaft off making them 2 wheel drive.
Our first one, a 2001 car had head gasket failure at 30k miles, and the 53 reg had the same issue at 65K miles which was when we got shot of it.. both had the KV6 engine.

I have towed a very heavy twin axle exhibition trailer with a Freelander 2 without issues, although above 55 mph it was a bit on the light side.
1500kg van was no problem at all. There are some high mileageexamples around for around£3.5k

If your hardly going to be towing I'd take a risk on a petrol at half the money of a diesel, if the head gasket goes it costs you towards what you'd have paid for a diesel if it doesn't you've gained! just look for one that's been looked after!

Just to be clear on the point I made about head gaskets, this was for the V6 2.5 petrol engines, not the 1.8.
Head gasket replacemt on the KV6 is a big job and will cost you north of a £1000 in a garage. this is because the engine has 3 cam belts to change as well as the other work involved. back then My first one was done under warranty at a cost £1845 So a few years later when another car had the same issue it was part exchanged.

Both the F1 KV6 and the 1.8 K had their issues with head gasket failure and overheating, The BMW engined TD4 is definitely the engine of choice but as stated above, F1's had plenty of other reliability issues including that dreadful viscous coupling. That
said, the F1 saved Land Rover from complete collapse, it sold in huge numbers and without it I doubt Land Rover would exist today. I had a 05 plate TD4 HSE auto and it was fairly reliable right up to the viscous coupler locking solid resulting in a failed
front and rear diff. Expensive!0 -

exactly my thoughts. I can get a very tidy 1.8 on an 02 for less than 1.5k with 70k on clock
as I say I am not towing I want something that I am not too bothered about something. I cn chuck a dirty dog in and something that I can park on a field and not get stuck on a shoot day. Plenty about at this price so obviously no one wants them

The issue with the K series 1.8 is that if it is allowed to overheat, the head warps resulting in the gasket blowing which can't be repaired without the head being removed and skimmed. The engine rarely develops this problem of it's own accord, it is usually because the cooling system runs low on coolant either through a leak, a failed cooling fan or something else that may cause overheating. The engine can't stand being allowed to overheat, not even once... it's very fragile in this respect. The FL1 didn't have a coolant level warning switch fitted from the factory but lots have had a kit retrofitted to give the owner some warning, you can buy the kit from LR resellers. At the price you are looking for a 1.8 FL I reckon it's a good buy, go for it but keep an eye on your coolant level. They are a good engine if looked after, very light for the power they produce which is why they were fitted to the Elise & Exige. When buying it's worth asking if the Dowty Coupling has ever been changed too, they don't last forever... a simple check when test driving is to drive forward and in reverse on full lock... if the car 'jumps' or feels tight, then there is transmission wind up which will kill the diffs. Walk away if you can feel this happening.

great info Nigel thank you. Looked at one today an 02 GS model I think it was 65k with full service history as far as I can see, a big pile of mot certs. In blue with side step things. Bodywork is imaculate and spears to have no rust or dents or any new panels.
Alloys are spotless . Drivers cloth seat has a rip / wear near door but other than that its perfect. Engine is clean with signs of gasket sealant on head so presumably it's had the new gasket fitted. £1695 trade0 -
Not bad though I'd be tempted to take a look at this first if it were my money, what do you think?

link not working nigel Bugger, not worked out how to post links properly yet, if indeed I can, I linked to a 54 plate X-trail, 2.5 petrol, in silver 74k miles. Close to your AutoTrader location. If you search on AT I'm sure you'll find it.

Fair enough, i went from LR to VW and now back with LR, I now have a RR Sport TDV8 which I really like. There's something about Land Rovers despite the often dodgy rep that sometimes goes with them. When they're working right, they're great :-) good luck
