    Hi Phil.

Welcome to CT.  I have never owned a Sorento but around 2009 time Kia were selling lot's of Sorento,s to caravaners because they were a great tow car at the right price, I think todays models are lighter with smaller engines but I may be wrong about this.
We tow with the big Mitsubishi Shogun and would never tow with anything smaller because I like to feel as safe as possible when towing.

Hi Phil and welcome, i tow with a 08 xs Sorento and have found it to be a great tug the nose weight is higher than most but the Mk3 is lower which put alot of people off buying newer.

Beware that the tax is £500 just because it is an auto my manual is £295 anyway i'm sure you wont be disapointed, hope i have helped.

Your right CGB the engine is smaller 2.2 on the new Sorento but it has 190bhp where the Mk2 2.5 has 165bhp.

We had a 2008 manual XS and swapped it for a 2009 auto XT. The manual suffered some clutch slip when reversing. The auto was a better tow car but suffered problems with Kia's software download and ended up having a new ECU under warranty to correct matters. We had an issue with cruise control sticking on which was scary and sometimes under load the auto box refused to change down.

We changed the 2009 Kia for a LWB Shogun - a far better animal.

    Phil.

With only 35.000 miles there is loads of life left in the engine, find out on the internet if the cam belt is chain or belts and if belts when they need changing.  Good luck.

Phil take a look at the Kia Owners site. There you can look at each model by year. Maybe see if there are any views/reports.

We have a 15 KX2 and think its a great car.

Two feet .... two pedals ..... what more would you ever need? (proper) Autos are the future.Wink

As for fixed or detachable towbar .... how deep are your pockets and how do you feel re a load of steel work on show?

We had an 09 Titan manual before our current KX2. It is a well equipped car , it was an excellent towcar with loads of torque, and totally reliable in 3 and a bit years of ownership.
