Anybody changed from the 'old' Volvo XC90 to the new one? What are your experiences? CC Towcare of the Year mentioned they thought the new one, being lighter, lacked some of the virtues of the old one. I would take this with a handful of salt but would be
interested in anybody's experience. At present I have the old model but thinking of changing next year IF I can afford it as they ain't cheap!

I haven't changed from the old model but I find the new model an excellent tow-car, the best I have ever towed with. Plenty of power and incredibly stable. Getting up to 28mpg towing 1600kg. Mpg solo on short journeys is disappointing but on a run am getting
40 + . Probably not yet run in as I have only done 5000 miles. it is a big beast and I would definitely recommend the 360 deg camera, this makes parking a doddle. It is very safe as it won't let you hit anything!!

Thanks for that James.  Very happy with my 'old' XC90 so will probably go for the new model in 2017. Mpg looks OK compared with old model.

We had one one of the first new XC90's in June 2015. Tow a 1595 mtlp Coahman with it. Very happy with the car but, to be honest I'd prefer a bigger engine. the D5 is no slouch but does not have the low down oomph of a Q7 or X5. Tested them both but still
went for the Volvo and love it.

We have the 'old' style XC90 and it's the best tow car we have had.

I talked to a chap in France who had the new model. He had also owned the old model and he thought the
    new one was far superior.

I asked him about the fact that the engine was now smaller and he reckoned that it felt at least as good as the old one.

The new model certainly looks the business and I'd be seriously tempted to buy one if we were in the market for a new tow car.

Many thanks for these comments/replies. I am very happy with my present 'old' XC90 but wil probably change to the 'new' one next year. Just need to empty the piggy banks and check the back of the sofa!
