Kia Sorento 2007 blown turbo

Hi all. We were on our way to Cornwall last Saturday, on the A420 just outside Swindon, when, without warning, we lost all power and there was a very loud whining noise.

Luckily we were approaching a lay by so managed to get off the carriageway and turn off the engine straight away. Called the AA, have to say they were brilliant arrived in 20 mins, he diagnosed a blown turbo and got us relayed to main dealer in Milton Keynes, our local dealer.

Anyway, they said we needed a new engine and turbo at a cost over £7k because oil pressures were slightly down, around 10 psi down cold low and high and warm low and high, no other issues with the engine at all. Now the car has done 90k miles so does have some wear. They also offered to fit a new turbo or fit a turbo that I could provide. This is the option we took.

The turbo has been replaced and the car runs and drives better than it did before. Now my question is. Are those oil pressures too low? Will the lower oil pressure cause the turbo break again? Or is that drop in pressure related mostly to the age and mileage of the car?

Any knowledge on this matter greatly appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned I don't think that kia engine  has oil pressure issues, it is possible that if they checked the pressure with the old turbo thet had failed it could affect the pressure reading, did they check it after fitting the new turbo?, saying
they the turbo is at the end of the oil pressure route, have the pressure checked again by an independant garage.

Oil pressure is effected by wear in the main bearings and the pump itself. At 90k the engine shouldn't be heavily worn providing it's serviced regularly and has the right spec oil. All turbo charged engines use a little oil. So the level should be checked monthly. If low on oil the turbo will be the first to suffer. I would take it to an independant listed in the good garages scheme for a second opinion. I don't like that they want to fit you a new engine for 7K.
