Mondeo 2015 Econotec 150PS, TDCI hatch .  Just completed 4750 miles holiday mixture of towing and solo and on motorways, country lanes and every variation between with a  2012 Swift Challenger Sport 524SR..Drove a dream and I couldn't have asked for better
(this is the seventh Mondeo I've owned) ..Overall it returned 41.7 mpg, which is very acceptable...I would recommend the vehicle to anyone.

Good to know for when (if) my 2000 1.8TD Mondeo finally gives up!  Trouble is it still happily pulls the 'van at 60mph; keeps passing the MOT with no problems; and has just had new tyres................

Hi Vicmallows, appreciate your current Mondeo still giving good service but when you do want a change keep in mind that a 2015 Econotec diesel Mondeo 1998cc is a £20 (yes £20) a year road tax..Also your Mondeo may be reaching that age when the diesel particulate
filter (DPF) is building up with soot and is quite expensive to have treated.

2000 1.8TD will be at that wonderfull age when there was no DPF fitted, and less electronics to go wrong!

If a car is new enough to have a DPF fitted, regular motorway runs will keep it in good condition as the unit becomes superheated at motorway speeds and burns away the carbon that builds up during non motorway runs.

I agree with what you say but during the winter months when lesser motorway and slower speeds are likely, the temperature reached by the DPF is unlikely to be hot enough to initiate the burn off necessary .

I very much doubt it given we rarely have truely cold weather. If it is an issue simply Give it a winter Italian tune up instead of a summer one! in other words rev the rollocks off it for a few miles in low gear at a lower speed.

Does anyone know if towing a caravan up a motorway at 58mph is sufficent to keep the DPF clean?

Dpf regeneration is not based on vehicle speed but on engine rpm, most vehicles require a drive cycle of 10-15minutes(dependant on manufacturer) at 2000rpm or more for the ecu to complete a regeneration cycle. put this into perspective my current vehicle
is only doing 1800rpm at 80mph in 6th. Hope that helps Tony

Surely you're not admitting to driving at well above the legal speed limit ....

Use 4th gear only for 10 miles,2000 rpm, DPF should reach 600 degrees which will kick in the programme for cleaning out the soot....older engines can also be treated to a bottle of Millers DPF treatment every 5th fill of diesel (full tank full).

Paul, read the posts carefully, no one is remotely suggesting breaking speed limits. As I said earlier, a winter version of an Italian tune up Laughing

Hi kuga1.. Your 180 all wheel drive sounds like a winner and as a towcar it should be fantastic although the road tax may not be £20 a year as in my case...You should never find yourself in a situation you ca'n't get yourself out of with your combination...will
be interested to know what road tax you will pay.
