Towing weight?

Many discussions on this topic, but I wonder... I often see vehicles towing car trailers, are these subject to the same criteria as caravans? Today for instance, a Renault Megane towing a trailer with a Land Rover on board???

So what is the towing limit of the renault, and what was the train weight and did it exceed the maximum permitted?

Sorry but I haven't clue - I presume that something was not quite right with the outfit you described!

According to Google 1300Kg, so by the time you add in the trailer weight, about double what he's supposed to pull.

They rarely stick to the speed limits for trailers. Often slow down when passed by a car and loaded car trailer to give me time and space to avoid any potential of being involved in a nasty incident.

I agree that the example quoted is a bit extreme, but low loader trailers are inherently more stable than big boxy caravans so one can go higher with the weight one can tow, but of course always one still has to stay within the limits allowed for the combination.

If the towing limit is 1300 kg then quite simply the outfit was illegal and could have resulted in the driver being prosecuted or if he had an accident without insurance.

As Lutz says however the towing ratio of this type of vehicle is less of a problem so in fact the towing ratio might not have been a problem.

The worst towing ratio at least in theory that I have seen was  Landrover towing an articulated lorry tractor unit. That could be as high as 400%.

Well that a trailer with quite a high centre of gravity but I note they keep the speed below any hint of its yawing or rolling natural frequency.

Strange wing/engine configuration for a 747. Was it some sort of 'training shell' rather than a working plane?

Well spotted CY. I know that aircraft,  and have seen it often in the background during TV's  "Top Gear" etc.  Its an old 747 shell used most recently as a film extra hence the unusual and very none airworthy B52 style engine mountings.  The airfield is actually a quite famous WW2 airfield in Kent but its name escapes this daft old ***er today.  It is very often used nowadays as a car test track for various manufacturers and also by TV companies etc. Limited private flying only now.

I suspect that that old 747 weighs only a fraction of a real in service 747 now. No fuel onboard, no real engines and almost no interior!

I bet it would struggle with the 12% incline restart.
