Reversing lights on new caravan not working
Hi Everyone, i have just bought a new sprite major 6 caravan and had a new towbar fitted to my landrover freelander 2, so i thought id check the lights on the caravan when connected to the towbar and all the road lights are working fine apart from the reversing
lights. they do light up on the car but not the caravan. the caravan dealer has told me all lights was working on the report and i have checked the lamps and they are in working order. i was thinking the towbar has been wired up wrong? any help would be grateful

Using a multimeter, measure between pin 8 and earth (pin 3) on a 13 pin socket when your car is in reverse, to see if the cars wiring is correct.
I also have a FL2 but with plug and play CANBUS loom on a MY13 model, is yours CANBUS or Smart relay?

Thanks Dave i will have a look at this once i get home from work in a couple of weeks. i couldnt tell you what loom i have, is this the loom for the towbar/car//caravan?

If you have a CANBUS loom installed in the car by the fitter you will have a trailer light on your dash that will illuminate with the indicators when connected to your caravan, plus a few more 'extras' such as automatic lamp failure detection. The reason I ask is, if it is a 'Smart Relay' install it is quite easy for the fitter to not having connected or omitted the wires, whereas if it is the CANBUS loom a pink wire is already incorporated for the job.

Once home from offshore I will need to check the wiring of the socket

What socket(s) have you had fitted to your car? If 12N & 12S ie 1 black & 1 grey socket, your reverse lights are/should be fed from the grey one
Hi Molly's mummy thanks for you interest, I do not have any of those sockets as I have a 13 euro pin socket.
I have just got a 2016 caravan and it's my first van so sorry if I don't know what I'm talking about lol

Dan. Sorry I cannot give you any advice but what I am about to type might make you chuckle. We hitched up (nervously) for the first time at the dealers where we bought the caravan. I think that we covered eveything but when we did a lights check the reversing
lights did not work. After a bit of faffing and near panic, we realised that the Coachman Amara 380/2 do not have reversing lights!0 -
Haha John that's funny, I have checked and checked again and I Deffo have reversing Lights lol. Great story though. We are looking at going away for our first trip soon and I think I have everything covered but we will soon see and if I have an hiccup I'll
post it for all to see lol0 -
No shame in admitting to mistakes. Bet everybody on here could tell us theirs. The good thing as far as I am concerned is that somebody will benefit. Have a great trip. Only 28 days and we will be heading for North Yorks

Write your comments here...I would be careful when opening the caravan door in the middle of the North sea! Thanks for the reply.

We changed out tow car recently and had to have a tow bar fitted (arrnged by the car dealer) and have discovered the reversing lights on the caravan (Affinity 2014) do not work.
They did on our previous tow car.
Checked 13 pin plug & socket both connected ok. Checked the car lights work solo and they do.
Did search on CT & found this post:http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/community/your-stories/Jon-C/Swift-Challenger-Sport-554-reversing-lights/rb/23067/
Hope the link works as it may well answer your problem.
Hoping it sorts ours out tho we do have 2 rev lights on the Sorento.
(if post link doesnt work do a search in CT revering lights it is the first post)

Interesting reading, the said universal seven way bypass relays are now becoming obsolete for use on many modern towcars. They are unable to tell the towcars ECU that a trailer has been connected so the ECU is able to make automatic adjustments to the towcar,
such as; correct bulb failure warning, disconnecting reversing sensors, disconnecting rear fog lights on towcar, changing shift pattens of automatic gearbox and changing engine management settings to allow for towing heavy trailers, just to name a few. In
other words, it's becoming very important upon modern towcars to be fitted with the correct specified tow-module.0
