Gents thanks for all the various thoughts, no one with an X5 brave enough to put their heads above the parapet, which was my question, but I am not closed off from casting the net more widely and have been having a look at the Merc as a possibility. Think
they do know how to build a car (just writing this as I watch two Mercs hurtle around a wee track in Abu Dhabi).Having owned 3 B'mers you get to know whats what a bit more (and hence why I am inclined that way - well was !) so am a new starter as regards the Mercedes. There seem to me to be a few basically simple things that suggest it might be the better way to go,
namely don't have to worry about Runflats and you do get a proper spare wheel (I think), the engine is fundimently a more reliable unit, it's better off-road, and just as much fun to drive (nearly !) as the X5. But my thoughts now turn to what would be the
Best Buy (ie year/model/mileage) for my money,. Would be very happy not to have to splash any more than - say £12k.So will continue with the homework........many thanks for all the suggestions/thoughts........any more gratefully received.

Just spent the weekend with a friend who is big green oval fan. His philosophy is simple he gets shut of them before the point the warranty runs out and he has to start paying for the parts that have packed up. He reckon £3.5k warranty claims on a 15 plate
RR sport so far.0 -
.... and you do get a proper spare wheel (I think), ....
Mine's one of
these so neither 'proper' nor skinny space saver. The lad next door bought himself a second hand X5 and it destroyed its engine (top end somewhere
) within a couple of weeks of buying it. It cost a couple of thousand quid to put right ... he sold it on.0 -
My spare on the ML is the same as all the other tyres, but its on a Tin Wheel as apposed to the other alloys!
A reasonable compromise on costs for the makers?

Nah, it's nothing to do with me. Tin Wheel..... Oh, well..

Dont know what you will get for 12k, but as a guide I traded my 2012 X5 40d, 40k miles, electric towball etc, last May. Got £20k against a new Porsche Cayenne.
That would suggest for 12k you will be looking at something 6 years old at lesst.
