2005 Passat Estate 130HP... What next ???
I have a Passat Estate 2.0 Trendline 130hp (Petrol) which I have had for 8 years now. It has been towing my 2005 Abbey Impression 520L for about 6 years now but I have never been very happy as it weighs about 1540kg and has always been in my mind at full
stretch for my Passat. I have never been comfortable with it towing as it lacks low end torque for pulling away and struggles to get away on slippery surfaces. SO I need some advice as I would like to change to an Audi. I would like to know if I would be better
off getting either a 2006-7 Audi A6 Allroad (Diesel) automatic 2.7 or an Audi A6 Estate 2.0 - 2.5ltr. I would like to know if the 2.0litre diesel would gime me that much more than the passat of whethher I need to go to 2.5litre. Type of Model advice would
be handy too. The thing that worries me with the allroad is that there is a lot more to go wrong and I have heard that the hydraulic suspension is quite unreliable. Is this the case?

Why not go for the non Allroad A6 estate which you can still get with 4wd? The air suspension problems were more of an issue with the earlier generation Allroads so wouldn't worry too much. The Diesel engines in all versions of the C6 generation of A6 (2005/11)
are 2.0 4 cyl, or a V6 TDi in 2.7 or 3.0 sizes, the V6 also having a 4wd (Quattro) option. I think the 2.0 is underpowered fir the car, the benefit of the V6 is not having a cam belt to change (Or break). I have just come out of a 2006 A6 estate 2.7tdi manual
with air suspension and 176k miles. However I wanted 4wd and automatic and having looked for weeks for an Allroad in budget went for a Passat Alltrack.0 -
+1 for this @flatcoat

The 2.0 liter 16v unit is the same engine you get in many Jeeps and the Mitsubishi outlander. It's a good unit with up to 185 hp 270 lbs of torque depending on the model. Torque is low down and very useable for towing. As Audi are making there cars lighter
for emitions only the A6 is heavy enough now. Mostly they are two wheel drive. I have quit Audi and bought a volvo as good Audis now silly money. The all road has air suspention which is very good when it works. But ruinious when it goes wrong. It does depend
on your budget which you don't mention. And if you use your car just for towing or as a dialy drive. 2.7 or 3.0 liter Audi is a great engine. But they are big money to buy. You could have a 3.0 liter S type jag for a third of the price. With rear wheel drive
and a diff lock they are pretty good towcars. XC90 worth a look also. Older one well made & great engines. You will be lucky to find an A6 with a sensible mileage under 10K. Jeep Patriot deasel is 1650kg and has the Audi 2.0 16v unit worth considering. Newer
ones Mercedes 2.2. 10K + Best to keep an open mind. Condition is everything. I went to buy a Jeep but ended up with a Volvo. Volvo drivers tend to really look after there cars. Many more good second hand ones out there. Audis like rocking horse manure.....

Agreed flatcoat. The Auto doesn't like towing. I got the manuel. Autobox is 2 grand to repair. Which if the car is cheap isn't too bad. But the downside is your off the road for 6 weeks whilst it's rebuilt. The manual have very expensive dual mass flywheels.
So not much cheaper when the clutch gives out. But you don't have to wait.... Do miss my old Audi though. Really good cars.0 -

I think I am pointing towards a 2006-2007 A6 Automatic maybe I should be looking again at getting an Alltrack. Are the Auto 2.7s ok for towing as one member said they weren't so good. There seems to be loads of earlier Alltracks
i.e. up to 2003 really cheap but having not had Audi before I am not sure of their reliability. We have several VWs and have had VWs for years. We use a Fox for general running about and it goes all over the regulary, in fact we have done 67000 in it in 3
years. Amazing little car. The passat is pretty much only used a few times a year for pullng the caravan so whatever we change it for will sit on the drive most of the year. Interesting that you went for a VW Allroad. I have only seen them around 10-12k so
I am interested in what sort of price you paid.0 -
I would not touch the early generation Allroad, simply too old given it us effectively an 18 year old design and technology. The post 2005 models are far better however I would go for the 3.0 which has much more power than the 2.7 with little penalty for
economy. Audi and VW share most of their engines and design under the skin and the parent company is VAG - encompassing VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborgini, Ducati, MAN etc. I paid £13k for my not quite 3 year old Alltrack with DSG, 46k miles, full
history and a towbar already fitted. I miss the air suspension and Bose sound however love the auto and VED is lower with 43mpg solo and about 25 towing a 1610kg T/A van. My initial budget had been £10-11k and concentrated on Allroads and Touaregs. Depending
on what nose weight you need I would also look at the A4 Allroad which can be had with the 3.0V6 tdi and is a bit if a Q car0
