Current Model Shogun

As mentioned in the other thread about the ML320 & Toureg, I currently run a ML300CDI but I have kept it far far longer than I have ever kept a car before and I feel like a change.

The trouble is that all the cars today seem to have "toy" engines fitted and I can't be doing with them. I passed my driving test in late February 1962 using a jaguar 3.4Mk 2 (I was working in the motor trade then). It was 2 weeks after my 17th Birthday.
 Since then I have driven nearly 1.4 million miles nearly always in cars exceeding 3 Litres.  For the past 20 years they have all been big 4x4's.  But now they are rapidly disappearing. My beloved ML300 has been replaced by the ML250 which has a weedy 2.1
litre 4 cylinder which I will not consider. Its power is OK but not its Torque.

But one waggon that seems to stick with a big engine is the Shogun. sadly its only a 4 cylinder & not a 6, but I would have considered it. Except I am told that the Shogun has dreadful fuel consumption when towing. 16mpg has been mentioned - against my current
24 when towing a heavy van.

Have any owners got comments please?

    What about a Touareg or Discovery? Both available with grunty large engines. Or an Audi Allroad?

    Maybe a Toureg.  Would love a Discovery, but as now partially retired I cannot afford a new one, and Disco's hold their price to the extent that my probable max of £30,000 won't buy a very recent one.

    Dont know enough about Audi's

    The F Pace Jaaag looks very nice .... available with 6 cylinders too ... around 300 horses & 500 torques. Way way too expensive yet for a mere Beanz fitter but a retired copper .... Wink

    The Shogun owners are being very quiet!

    Am I to assume that the stories regarding fuel consumption are correct?

    Audi's are upmarket VW's using similar Engines/running gear. Look at an A6 Allroad, same V6 TDi engine as the Touareg.

    Have you considered there may not be any with the current model, TF? We had a 2011 model but I've kept quiet as you stated 'current model'.

    If it's of interest, our Elegance was a superb tug. Yes, it was thirsty. 16-18mpg towing and around 26 solo. We considered that to be a small price to pay and would have another if we needed a tug.

    Thanks TW, that only goes to confirm what I had heard.

    I guess that I will have to stick with the ML. On my recent journey down to the Penzance area, it averaged 24 towing each way, and nearly 10mpg more than that when solo.  There's not much point in laying out about £15k to get an 18 month old Shogun but then paying a lot more for fuel.
