Could anyone suggest a reliable towbar supplier and fitter in the Durham/Darlington Area? we have tried several (Hedleys, CBS, Towbars2u) and they're all quoting over £400!! our vehicle is a Lexus is220d and needs a 13pin, witter, detatchable towbar as this
is the only type that can be fitted (apparently). Any suggestions gratefully recieved. Why is it so expensive?

You think £400 plus is expensive, i paid £750 for detachable towball on my Volvo XC60, however you could try Towbar Express Tel 0800 3280592, they are based in Whitby but have a national fitting service. Have used them twice and both times have been exellent.

The bloke opposite me had a F Pace Jaaag. He told me that factory electric towbar was £750. Not bad I thought.

Interesting. Been looking at one of those.

Currently happy with a Freelander 2 but not that keen on the Disco Sport when it's time to change.

£400 -ish is dirt cheap in my experience.  The towbar and electrics on my (then) new VW Touareg, last year, cost me over £1200.  Wasn't prepared to risk anyone other than the dealer fitting it and thereby invalidating the warranty, so I had no alternative.

..A very  nice looking vehicle, do they have an option of more cylinders than doors?
Innocent Not sure that the light coloured leather interior would stay clean very long with a Molly the Mutt.

Disco Sport has a small engine I like some grunt and the new jag has a bigger engine. Not sure if it's a 4 pot or not.

Agree about the hairdresser interior.  Not good with dead fysh on it

thank you for your information on towbars. (not sure that discussions on "jags" was relevant to my original post).

I suppose money outlay is relevant to a familys income and circumstances, so to me, yes £400 is expensive.!

    Thanks anyway

We digressed ..... originally to compare an all singing all dancing leccy towbar on a Jag was the same price as Sell's Volvo's

We're blokes, so thread drift, especailly on cars is inevitable, its a boy thing.

However, see this link for towbars available from PFJones:

    http://www.pfjones.co.uk/tow-bars/tow-bars-for-lexus/lexus-is-220-towbars.html

You'll need a wiring kit which doesn't show on the website. However there is a nationwide fitting service button that expands into an enquiry form that you fill in details.

You'll probably get close to your budget.

I'll not put up the price of a towbar for my Merc S Klasse, that factory fit on a new car is £950; aftermarket is over 4x, but then it needs cooling system mods as well, but cheaper than an overheated gearbox at £12k  Tongue Out

Hedleys in Durham are really great tow bar fitters, they really know their business. I also think they wouldn't rip you off, I've had about 5 tow bars from them and everyone has been a great job and good value. My last one was a detachable on my Jag XF.
Personally I wouldn't have trusted others with the job!

Sorry i did not intend to appear rude, just thought £400 was on the cheap side for towbars in todays age of dedicated wiring which now seems to be the norm.

Please don't take offence that the conversation drifted. that happens in real life too. Someone says something that is picked up upon and off you go.

If the forum had a PM facillity then it would be easy to have that conversation away from the main thread but that's not possible on this forum.

It is of course very easy for anyone so inclined to bring thread back to the subject title by simply by posting something on the original subject.

As I say, no offence was intended whatsoever and please do carry on with the original subject matter.
