Jockey wheel

I have a Lunar Clubman 2003... i have had to replace  the front jockey wheel twice in one journey. The solid rubber wheel has split right across and come off the inner core ( plastic, which is also damaged). Its asif the wheel is being dragged along the
road as i tow the caravan..but cant see how this is possible. There is a good 2" gap between wheel and road when fitted. !!!

Could this be due to caravan bouncing over humps or bumps in the road ?

Anyone come across this problwm before...?

    Sounds to me as if the movement up and down at the rear of the towing vehicle when riding over dips and bumps is enough to drag the jockey wheel on the road, 2" inches is not much clarance, our jockey wheel fits right up inside the "A" frame and has no chance
    of hitting the road.  Check to make sure you have tucked it away properly.

    A 2 inch gap between wheel and road?  That is way too low.  We have a 2011 Lunar Clubman SE.  When the jockey wheel is wound up to its shortest length and then the entire jockey unit lifted so that the wheel fits inside the plastic cover of the hitch assembly
    you can't even see the jockey wheel.  Are you stowing the wheel correctly?  Another possibility is that the whel unwinds on the journey until it eventually gets low enough to foul the road.  This happened to us once, now when the wheel is stowed I put a rubber
    bungy around the winding handle and secure the other end to the towball area.  This prevents the handle turning when moving.

    We've just sold a 2002 Lunar Delta and I agree with the comments above, there should be much more than 2"  ground clearance. Sounds like the rear suspension of your car needs assistance or a good coat of looking at.

    Two inches is less than many speed bumps or raised manholes and is far too little. On our newer Lunar the jockey wheel has to be lined up front to back facing the rear and then fits into a gap in the A frame. Not sure if yours is the same but I would try
    that but you do need it far higher.

    What is the nose weight of your c/van? It sounds as if it's ether too heavy or the rear suspension on the car is in need of some help

    I would`nt leave the drive with a 2" gap!
