We am fairly new to Caravaning and we are thinking of buying a VW Touran 2.0 Tdi 190bhp to tow our Luna clubman. We would be grateful of any advice on the cars towing capabilities.

A Touran is around 1500Kg, so 85% of that as one relatively new to towing gives you a van MTPLM of about 1275Kg. Once you have more experience, a heavier van could be feasible but as a general principle you want heavy car/light van.

I was a bit dumbfounded by reading in the manual that I should not have towed for several hundred miles - so that is worth checking out.  Hopefully I didn't do any harm to the tow car but I think they should have warned me to wait before towing - since they
fitted the tow bar they knew I was intending to tow.  I thought driving slowly and carefully had gone out with the ark with new cars.  Running In?  doesn't really seem to be a thing of the past if you read the small print!

It's the same with the one we're getting, Pippah. From what I've been told and have read in a copy of the manual I'm supposed to do 1000km before towing. That's well over two month's driving for us without the van on the back. Can't see me sticking to it
    though,

A few years ago my new car came one week before I was due to go to France with the caravan, the manual said the same 1000 miles before towing, I managed to get 300 miles in that week and off we went, great holiday no problems just don't over Rev the engine
going through the gears, should be no problem

We've always taken 1000 miles to settle in brand new car engines. While not doing so isn't likely to cause an immediate calamity we believe that putting an extra load on an engine before the rubbing surfaces have honed enough to fit perfectly will reduce
the engine's ultimate life expectancy. As modern cars are likely to last for around 150,000 miles, most new car owners don't care because they will have sold the car by then.

Yes jennyc - I just wish the salesman had drawn my attention to it - but the cynic in me says its in his best interests for me to bust the car and want a new one!  He should be so lucky I won't be using the same Mitsubishi dealership if I stick with the
same car next time!  Arrogant and patronising is one way of putting it!  I had a couple of unusual questions like how to lock the car with the dogs inside and not trigger the alarm - they didn't know of course.

How many of us know how to lock the car without the alarm?  Not many judging by the alarms going off in the Brittany Ferry I travelled on the other week where they make it clear alarms should be switched off!??

The car is a bit light for most Clubman models but you do not say which one you are looking at.

Pippah, we looked at Mitsubishi a few times at different garages, as we went round the country. We found that most of the salesmen weren't that really interested, which is one of the reasons that we've been put off getting one.
