Hoping someone can help with advice...

I currently tow my Sprite major 4SB with a 2014 XTrail ( old style) and it's great. Will be looking for a change early next year when contract runs out. I would love another XTrail but fear that the new smaller engines are not up to the job. Just to explain,
I am a female who mainly tows solo so want a car that I can rely on to keep me safe and will get out of most problems when towing.

I have looked at the Octavia Scout but this doesn't come up as a great match- perhaps a bit too light for 85% match. I have recently come across the Mazda CX-5 AWD which seems to be much heavier in the larger Diesel engine models. Does anyone have experience
of this car and can give any advice on towing with it, fuel consumption both towing and solo and any other advice.

Thanks for your help

Gill

I'm on my second cx-5, first one was a 175awd sport manual with nav. A great towcar, actually a better towcar than my 2009 193ps T31 xtrailtrail, and on a par with my 2004 136hp T30 xtrail.

I now have a 175ps awd auto sport nav with a kerbweight of 1703kg, again a great towcar but no better than the manual car.

Manual car would show around 41 to 43mpg solo locally and 26 to 34mpg towing 1565kg.

Auto returns around 38 to 40mpg locally, but only 24 to 28mpg towing the same weight.

All those average computer readings are 2.5 mpg higher than what a brim to brim calculation would show.

Hope this helps my dinner is ready.

    Xtrailman,

Thanks for that. I was hoping you would reply as Ive seen some of your reviews of earlier models. Definately looking at manual.

Thanks once again, enjoy your dinner, we are just taking in the last of the sun's rays over in Spain!

Have a look at the mazdacx5 uk forum, and mazda247 cx5 forum, plenty of information on there.

I towed my 1440 withkg Lunar Clubman with a 175 CX5 Sport for three years. A great tow car and excellent solo. I have found Mazda dealer's to be really helpful as well. Mazda has a good reputation for reliability as well. Ignore negative comments about the
dpf as they only related to early models.

I know it's not a 4WD/AWD, but my VW passat tows a sprite major 6TD brilliantly. (MTPLM 1500).

Thanks for all your comments. This certainly seems like a serious contender for my next tow car. I've got a few more months to check out  suitable cars now, so glad of your opinions.

    Currently towing a 1282kg caravan (78% match) with a new 2016 CX-5 Sport 2.2D 150 2WD manual.

So far we've only towed with it twice, but on both occasions it has been a dream and pulled really well. Averaging around 36mpg (mix of motorway & country) towing and 50mpg solo (mainly motorway).

It never fails to puts a smile on your face when driving solo.
