Kerb Weights and Max Towing Weights

We took our Audi Q3 yesterday for the dealer to do an AdBluse fill and also to do an ESC update.  Car had this plus safety check and 1 litre of oil for the very sensible sum of £32.

Anyway our car has a kerb weight of 1740 kgs and can tow 2000kgs on eith an 8% or 12% incline which is how Audi show their capabilities.  Next time due to the weight of our caravan Id like some extra kerb weight. So we looked at an Audi A6 Avant with the same engine, gearbox and 4wd system.  It weighs in at 1800 kgs and can tow 2000 kgs like the Q3 but only on the 8% incline. At 12% it can only tow 1,800 kgs.

So I'm trying to make logic from all of this.  Also are these inclines figures for restart purposes?

Yes the car has to show its capable of a hill start a number of times, 5 i believe.

The towing limit is what weight the car can restart five times on a 12% hill. This figure has nothing to do with safety but more what the car can handle before you do mechanical damage.

What you can tow safely depends on what you tow and where. It is entirely different towing a broken down car round town at slow speeds than a slab sided caravan down a windy motoway at 60 mph.

The 85% figure the club suggests is based on the latter and while it is perhaps a bit pessimistic it is sensible advice.
