When reversing my caravan with my Peugeot 3008 1.5 diesel the clutch gets very hot (smells) even on a slight incline!

Some cars reverse gear is quite high meaning you have to continuously 'slip' the clutch especially if you are having to make slow progress, and some cars are better than others. Afraid an Auto is the only way forward Cool

Many years back my manual Suzuki Vitara was very bad for a smelly clutch in reverse, very high geared.

AlfB, a lot of family cars will suffer smelly clutches when reversing with a caravan. It can simply be due to the clutch pedal being slipped for control of the reversing outfit for complete control. It is also worsened by the type of towing vehicle and weight
of the caravan. The power of the 308 may be on the poor side if it's a heavy caravan.

I've had hot smelly clutches on various cars over many years but never had to replace one!

We had a manual Kia Sorento that kept slipping the clutch when reversing the caravan. Changed it for an auto and never looked back.Cool

When I first tried reversing a caravan I got really worried about the smell that I thought it was about to burst into flames! We store our caravan on our drive which is on a slope upwards away from the road and, as such, have now always had movers fitted
to the van. It makes life so much easier!

It is worth checking that the auto-reverse has properly released the caravan brakes before you reverse up a slope. I normally pull forward slightly before engaging reverse. This ensures that he auto-reverse kicks in to release the brakes.

    Cheers

I'm not sure it should take a weight off your mind Al. It might be a fairly common occurrence but it means your clutch is slipping and 'burning' the clutch plate and it could well lead to premature failure of the clutch plate. Clutch slip should be avoided
    if possible for that reason.

AlfB, get a motor mover fitted. You can use it for any purpose you need whether at home or even getting out of a muddy field as it's so low geared . It's cheaper to buy than the cost of having to have a new clutch and release bearing fitted .

Write your comments here...Same here, cars with plenty of power, and always setting off on inclines, three cars in total.
