hello

i thought there was a database to put in your vehicle/ caravan details and lookup whether I can tow it safely, but I'm struggling to find it.

can anyone offer any advice on the weight of van I should look for please?

I have a Skoda Yeti 2.0TDi 150 DSG 4x4.

i will be looking for a 2 berth with an end bathroom, cheapish to start with.

any advice appreciated.

thanks

That will be quite a good towcar Delkay.  I saw one only last wek at Swindon Caravans towing a Lunar Clubman SB which is a 4 berth with fixed single beds at the rear.  Went away to look at weights and it was pretty much the same as our Audi Q3.

I have a Skoda Octavia Estate 2,0TDi 4x4 (138bhp, manual) it has a mass in service of 1,495kg so a little lighter than the Yeti. My caravan is a Compass Omega 482, 2 berth end bathroom, has a mtplm of 1,318kg giving a ratio of 88% and pulls it with no problem
    at all and very stable.

Click 'Advice and Training'  above and this gives a link to the car/caravan matching service.

Every Time i,ve used the CC matching service I've found the car kerbweights incorrect.

IME its a waste of time.

Then it's the 85% 'guideline' or max towing/outfit weight as given in the handbook.

Towed 1400kg with a Yeti 170 TDI without issue.

Torque on the new 150 is much the same so don't see an issue towing up to around this weight.

I would think 1400 would be  bit high for a newcomer to towing and would stick to about 1350 or less if possible.

The weight is to me very borderline but managable for an experienced caravanner. If the OP is new to towing then I would say your caravan is too heavy for him.

My ideas come from the fact that I spent over twenty years investigating acvidents. People tended to say they had not had problems before the accident and had not realised there may be a problem. It is only when you get something exceptional happening that
you realy find out if the outfit is totally safe.
