Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TCDI 138 BHP
I've just purchase a Blue Motion Passat with a 138BHP and 236lb/ft to replace my SMax. Thought the car would be OK but having doubts after what I've read. I'm pulling a Swift Challenger Sport 554. My question: does anyone have any experience in towing this caravan or similar with the 2:0 TDC Passat. My initial thought was that I should have gone for the 170 BHP version. Any comments would be appreciated .

All I can say is that we tried the S-Max 142 BHP manual and it had worse performance than our previous C-Max. We would have kept this but it was too light for the van we wanted . We went for the 163 S-Max Powershift which we find has good performance (similar acceleration to C-Max) with our 1500 MTPLM van. The only thing we are disappointed with is the motorway/towing fuel economy but otherwise it's a great towcar.
Perhaps consider a re-map/tuning box for more power (but I don't like the idea of finding insurance or effect on warranty?)

We towed our Challenger Sport 514 with our estate version (62 plate). My husband loves the car, tows like a dream and excellent MPG. On motorways he feels he has to hold the car back. We are now waiting for delivery of our new caravan (92% match) and he
has no worries at all that it will tow any different. He took the car to the local weighbridge a couple of weeks ago - came in at 1640kg with him (he weighs74kg) and 3/4 tank fuel, which is much higher than the figure in the book. He reckons it's the best
tow car he's had.

We have certainly found that our Audi Kerbweight figure is higher than that quoted by Audi. It appears their figures don't include the driver and I'm not sure it includes fuel either. So I wouldn't be surprised if the same isn't true for other VAG brands.
The mass in service weight on the V5 is actually 1,700 Kgs.0 -
Well, this http://www.thetowcarawards.com/winners/2015/ would suggest that the 150PS Estate will be a good tow car, guess yours will be similiar
