VW Passat as a towcar

Has anyone else had problems with Passat clutch and gearbox failure? Ours is just over 3 years old (2012) and the clutch has disintegrated and worn a hole through the gerabox leading to catstrophic failure and an expensive repair. VW have not been at all
helpful and I would not buy another one!
