Towing Problems

edited February 2016 in Towcars & Towing #1

From a number of posts on here and other forums I realise I have a number of deficencies in my towing technique these are:

When I tow, I do know that the Caravan is on the back.

When I tow, the fuel economy goes down.

When I tow , I do not have X-ray vision therefore require extension mirrors to improve my rearward vision.

When I tow,  I am unable to reach my destination 10 minutes before I set out, actually, strangely I find having a caravan on the back slows me down.

Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?  Helpful advice and suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

What you are doing wrong is rising to the bait! most of the claimed economy figures are figments of imagination based on a glimpse of the cars computer calculated constant speed mpg. As long as you are happy with your set up and it is legal I wouldn't worry
    about it.

I do all those things wrong to but  I also cant reverse  into every pitch known to man and do it fist time.

I can reverse onto most pitches other than CC ones. Given up trying to hit the peg whilst hitched up and use the mover instead. In fact, it is usually impossible to see the peg from the driving seat.

The only thing I can see that you are absolutely doing  is ignoring the few who think that what you have posted is in their minds, what they must be dreaming

Boff there is another rule about towing that I find applies to me!

It is that on my first outing of the year, my reversing of the caravan onto a pitch leaves a lot to be desired!  It is much better by the end of the season but then i stop doing it for about 5 months and it all goes to pants again!

    Thank god for movers!

Nope boff i like the other posters think you have it spot onLaughing. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

    My rules are:-

travel at the speed You want to go at

Dont get stressed about what others think

You get there when you get there and in one piece

And my reversing gives other campers something to laugh atWink. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

+ if i cant argue with the wife when putting the awning up whats the excuse for a beer??

I am not one of life's natural reversers.  I can do it but it took a lot of failures.  More a testament  to my persistence than skill.

Love your post Boff. I think that you are typical of the majority of members, me being one of them.

Write your comments here...Keep going away during the 5 months off and your reversing will carry on improving, it is as warm in the van as at home in winter.

To improve the fuel consumption only tow downhill and to avoid problems with the mirrors only use deserted straight roads.

To get there before you set off drive there in reverse. It should make you competant if nothing else.

If none of these work just accept the problems cannot be solved and do not worry.

Couldnt guarantee no hills but lots of straight deserted roads can be had in Spain and if you drive from the Spanish border into Portugal for less than 1 hour you will arrive before you leftWinking

The only problem is that you have to use hundreds of pounds to get there in the first place!!!!Wink

Nearer  a thousand but I didnt think we were talking about economics just having a laughWinking

This idea of crossing from Spain to Portugal appeals, but I don't think it is ambitious enough.  Surely there is somewhere you can tow across the international date line so you could arrive the day before you leave.

If you can use a road with no speed limits, try reaching the speed of light and ride one of those new fangled gravitational waves. Spacetime distortions will ensure you arrive before you leave. And no one will complain you are holding the traffic up.

I am afraid it is all water on the international date line. The best way I suppose is have the outfit on a boats deck and drive along the deck as you cross it.
