We've just taken delivery of our new Mondeo which comes with the Active Park Assist facility for parallel parking. SWMBO has just asked me, with tongue in cheek I'm sure, "Will the system work OK with the caravan on the back?" !!!??!!!

The New Mondeo. What was the outcome of the noseweight issue? Is it printed on the tow hitch?

John,  is  this Active  Park  Thingummy  like  having  Motor  Movers  at  90*  to  the  normal  wheels,  so  you  just  go  sideways  with  a  little  help  from  the  reversing/parking  sensors  ??

I still don't beleive that 'park assist' will get you into a slot as well as a driver who knows how to do it.

Why do they call it park assist? On the TV adverts it seems to do it all by itself, without any assistance from the driver.

Write your comments here...Tony, Ford have now changed the online spec to 90kg. The owner's handbook, available online also shows 90kg maximum loading.

I quite agree and if you need Park Assist, should you be driving anyway.

I think you will find there are a lot of aids that enable those who  could not otherwise drive to do so. I would imagine someone with very limited mobility in the upper body would find it very useful indeed.

Presumably people with motor movers will get sneered at also.

I can usually reverse a caravan and park a car first time, every time, but I have no problem with people who use a little help!!!!!!!

My sorento will drive itself into a parking space and then drive itself out again. I doubt if I we'll use it but the great thing about such technology is that it is there if I need it.

Eventually all cars will have such technology just like ABS, electric windows etc etc that were once considered luxuries and, to a certain type of driver,  not necessary.

We'll  soon have outfits that we can feed our pitch preferances into,  South facing, not under trees, not too close to the kids playground, hardstanding, near  to water tap etc., and then send it off to find your perfect pitch, level the the van and connect
the EHU ,  HOLD ON,  my wife has already got such an outfit....driven by me.

Who ever  invented the motor mover needs a Medal from the  Hernia and Bad Back Society (if there is one ?)

Anybody that cannot double declutch should not be driving. Anybody that needs power steering should not be driving. Radial tyres? What was wrong with my old John Bull Crossply remoulds? A HEATER! THAT IS FOR SOFTIES! Good grief, what will they think of next?
Maps that show you where to go as you drive? Anybody that needs one of those should not be driving.

    Exactly this!

It's easy for those that can to say those that can't shouldn't be on the road. I've driven all kinds of knackers and clackers over the years that were hard work (and good fun) to drive. I could argue that anyone who can't drive a '69 Minor shouldn't be driving.

The most fun car I've ever driven was a Bond E Mini car
    this exact car
The owner (driving it in the video) has driven it at 65mph!!!! 45 was plenty fast enough for me. Rather amusing just about overtaking a cyclist going up the Cat and Fiddle. Brakes ....... err.... just about! The most obvious ...... a wheel
missing! But this one had reverse ...... you stop the engine & restart it backwards..... honest.

    great piece of technology but.....

the main reason folk give when struggling with parallel parking is 'i dont know which way to turn the wheel.....'

this is the very thing that probably worries the life out of those who 'do know which way to turn the wheel....'

lets hope the former group are OK with this 'steering' technique when travelling in a forward direction....Undecided

You could well be right but having it on my wifes Golf I have to say I am very very impressed.

The first few times we needed one of us outside to make sure as from the driving seat neither of us could believe it would clear. I believe the sales video said it ensures there is a minimum of 35 mm clearance, ie less than 1.5", not a clearance I can consistently, or would choose to judge in a blind spot, Neither of us can match the speed it spins the steering wheel, or would I suspect.

It also does the extract, and again impressive. All that said we use it rarely.

But some had an electric start ..... dynastart, hence the abilty to start them up in reverse to give reverse gearS.
